Kanyakumari is the one place in India where you can experience the sunrise & sunset on the horizon from the same place.Having said that, there is nothing much to do or see, apart from encountering hoardes of people.
I thought it was a very strange place, with nothing much to do or see, just the fact you're at the bottom of India is reason enough for most people to go.
I hated it. Too hot, too dry, too dusty, too many people trying to sell us rubbish.
But I really think we hit it on a bad day (for us), so I'm more than willing to give it another chance one day.
And if you are going that way anyway how can you miss saying you've been to India's most Southern point?

I enjoyed it, though I normally enjoy visiting everywhere. You can take a fun boat ride to the Vivekananda Memorial off shore - that's quite exciting. There's also the Kanniyakumari Temple to see. Then its just a matter of chilling out and enjoying the sea views, the sunrises and the sunsets. The railway station is quite impressive, and has a stall selling Himanchal Pradesh Apple Juice - I wonder how it gets there - Himsagar Express, maybe?! A proverb near the station master's office reads 'the only thing that matters is the cause that one works on' which gives the traveller something to contemplate.
For a cheap hotel, try the Arunagiri, 59 Madurai Rd T334553 62 rms with TV, some balconies, spacious, courtyard with trees, very good value. Slightly more expensive is the Manickam, North Car St T346387 F346657 55 pleasant rms, some with sea-view and balcony. Multi-cuisine rest. Good value; or the Shivas Residency, South Car St T346150 18rms, 3 A/C in newly opened central hotel. Spacious, quiet, and very clean.

Why would it not be worth a visit? What makes some place "worth" a visit, while another place isn't? Kanyakumari is a dusty little Indian town washed by two oceans, with a temple and a big statue in the water. It draws lots of Indian tourists, hence the beggars. But if your criterion against visiting some place in India is the presence of beggars, then you've got a difficult path ahead.

Early March 2006. Yea, the tsunami got kanyakumari full on apparently..There were quite a lot of people on Vivekananda rock when the tsunami blew over them but aparently not a single person on the rock in the ocean died!
although many on shore did..
now that i ve experienced it...
hi !
well, i must say that i didn't like this most southern point in the otherwise beautiful India, because it was to much of a holy hindu place (of course there is nothing wrong with that but) which gave me the impression that i was an untouchable.
when they gave me some change they trew the money in my hands, unkind people...
such a pitty
okay, nevertheless, my 1 month KErala and 1 month Sikkim were a very nice exp!
