I think it's about 30kms.

The Nilgiri Express (train 2672) meets the toy train at Mett and departs at 19:45 getting to Coimbatore at 20:30, just buy a 2nd class unreserved ticket and jump in an unreserved carriage, they won't fill up till Coimbatore.

Why the Kerala Express?, a strange choice given the departure time from Coimbatore, and also because it comes all the way from Delhi (though it's supposed to be a reliable train and was when I used it).

Exactly 36 km. In my opinion would be better and quicker to take a bus to Coimbatore.

I agree, but not sure where to take the bus from, on my first visit to india, on my 2rd day I arrived in Mett. on the Nilgiri Express, Mett seemed like a tiny railway community with no sign of any solid road or buses, I enjoyed walking through this small place looking for a place to buy cigarettes, I didn't need cigarettes, that was just the excuse I had in my head in case anyone asked what I was doing there or where I was going, I was still very nervous, but determined to go walkabout.

I can still picture it, along the platform, out of the station, kept walking forward about 80-100 metres, the mud path/road turned a full 90% to the right and kept going about the same distance, there were then a couple of shops, I bought some cigarettes, exchanged a few smiles, bought a bottle of coke (I hate coke, but I knew what it was), drank the coke and exchanged a few more smiles with the small crowd that were gathering, bought some biscuits, then walked back to the train glad that I'd survived and wondering why I'd first thought the crowd of smilers may have come to mug me.

First time nerves....
