Hi,
This is how I will plan;
Day 1 = arrival at madura in the morning.
Alagar temple, Perumal temple, Tiruparamkundram Karthik temple and Madurai meenakshi temple.
Day 2 = Hire a taxi and make one day trip to rameshwaram and back to madura.
Day 3 = You can catch a bus/train to kanyakumari.It is around 250
kms from madurai and a bus journey may take around 5-6 hours roughly. Later visit the kanyakumari temple and sunset point.
Day 4 = Wake up early morning to view the sunrise and after breakfast visit the vivekananda memorial and suchindram temple in the afternoon. You can catch a night train to chennai.
This is only a rough plan and if you require any details please post.
with regards,
n kumar

Spending time at madurai
========================
As Kumar suggested, you get down at Madurai first. Book a hotel near by train station. Finish the temple visit by morning itself.

Meenakshi Temple
Vaigai Comes early morning, Early morning tharisanam at Meenakshi temple is worth of million. 2-3 hrs maximu.

Thiruparankundram
=================
Murugan - karthikeyan temple with stone carved cave moorthis. Very Very old.

Maari Amman Mheppakulam Tank
============================
If you have time, will take 30 minutes. You will enjoy it.

Come back to hotel, have a break fast and rest.

Thirumalai nayakkar mahal
=========================
You can spend to 2-3 hrs to see the Tamil+thuluva Nayakar Architecture. very exciting. If it is very hot don't forget to have Sugarcane juice (Rs 5-7).

Window shopping at Phuthu Mandapam
============================== ====
Phuthu mandapam located next to meenakshi temple and you see great architecture there. Sculptures, pillars..talks about ancient people culture.

Alagar Temple at evening

You can enjoy the hilly surrounding. Very cool place compare to hot dusty madurai.

You almost done for the day, come back to hotel.If you like it you can go to meenakshi temple again for Tharsan.

I dont recommend the public transportation. Because you have only 8-12 hrs. so hire a cheap car TATA Indica or you can use the auto.

Auto charge
Train station - Meenakshi temple = Rs 25
Meenakshi temple - Tiruparankundram - Rs 150 -200
Tiruparankundram via theppa kulam - your hotel : 200-250
Train station hotel - Nayakar mahal - Rs 30-40
Nayakar Mahal - Temple - Rs 25-35
Train Station hotel - Azhagar Koyil - Rs 200 -300 (one way)

As you see the total cost will be more than Rs 1000.00.

Hiring a Rental Car say TATA Indica will cost you around that much including the Driver beta.

Call your best choice....

For rental car i recommend Palanivel carrentalmadurai.com

Consider Kodaikanal after Madurai.
============================== ===
Kanth, as you are traveling with family I recommend Kodaikanal Hillstation in trip.It will add different flavor in your trip rather simply visiting the temples.I am sure kids love it. Kodaikanal is 120-130 KM from madurai. You can plan one full day even a night halt there.

But remember 8 hrs (one day is not enough) to visit every place in kodaikanal.

Below must see places in kodaikanal

Fairy Falls (5 kms)
Pillar rocks (7 kms)
Silver Cascade

If required you can call off the Azhagar Temple In madurai (will take atleast 3-4 hrs) use that hours to travel to kodaikanal. Have a night stay and come back to madurai for rameswaram trip.

Rameswaram is 180 KM from Madurai.I recommend only three at rameswaram.

Rameswaram Temple, Akni theertham, Ramar Paatham (Ramar feet print) I recommend 6:00 AM from madurai you can take the bath at Sea and start the Swami tharsan.

In the temple you see guys with bucket asking you Rs 60 - 70 head to pour the Theertham water on your head. This temple has more than 12 theertham ( i forgot exactly how many) inside the compound.

That Rs 70 includes government imposed Rs 10, 20 Rupees for local thug who took the contract remaining goes to the person who pull the water pour on your head.

I felt rip off, but what can i say . They dont allow you take the bucket too. Just keep your mouth shut and pay them.

After tharsan, you can go and visit the Ramar Paatham. It has nothing significant, no temple architecture...

For my opinion Rameswaram doesn't have any significant other than temple. Thanuskodi sucks tooo..you see sands..and a monument for the Tsunami victims.

My Call is as soon as u finish Temple tharshan return back to madurai.

While returning if you have time, take the KARAIKUDI from Ramanathapuram and visit the Pillayar Koyil (Ganesh temple). maintained by Nagarathar people. Hearing lot of happening about that moorthi nowadays.

Again recommend renting car at madurai rather public transportation. For rental car you know where to go CarRentalmadurai.com

Please note that Pillayar koyil is located at Pillayar Patti

Me assuming you are planning to travel by train from Chennai -Kanyakumari with stop over at madurai.

After Rameswaram you can take the train to Kanyakumari.
At kanyakumari, make sure you spent a night to see the Sun Raise.

Must see places

Vivekananda Rock
Kumari Temple
Thiruvalluvar Statue
Beach
16TH Century Church Roman Catholic Church

hi,
yrskumar from kamal hassan home town has given all the details and i just want to say, an indica guy will charge you around 1850/= up and down from madurai -rameshwaram -madurai. As reskumar suggested pulliar patti is really a nice temple to be visited. If you want to cover madurai-rameswaram-pulliar-patti-madurai you have to leave early in the morning so that you reach remeshwaram by 10.00 am max, take a bath in the wells, darshan, beach etc, and visit dhanushkoti and have a late lunch. After that you can proceed to pulliar patti and go back to madura.

with regards,

Please check Nandakumar ! That's KK express and the timings are "am".

And to Ak,
No Train between the places at the specified time. You could try to get to Nagerkoil Jn from where you could get bus to kanyakumari [ just around 40 minutes journey]!
Just a FYI. Buses are pretty frequent in that circuit !
