I will be arriving in Trivandrum around 9:30 AM (taking the Trivandrum Rajdhani (2432)), and would like to reach Kanyakumari from there.

I am not familiar with the area and would appreciate it if someone can tell me specifically where to go from the Trivandrum station to get to Kanyakumari. I am open to taking a bus - are there buses running frequently to Kanyakumari?

I see that there is a train that leaves TVC:
6526 KANYAKUMARI EXP TVC 15.15 CAPE 18.00 02.45

Also, are there places nearby in Trivandrum where we can visit if the train route is better?

Thank you for your replies in advance,
babA

The most relaxed way to Kanyakumari is to go by train, there should be an earlier train, too. You can also go to Nagercoil by train and then take a bus.

There are frequent buses from Trivandrum, too. If you go by bus, you can visit Padmananthapuram Palace on the way.

Federica, thanks for your reply. How can I see the temple if I go by bus? Does the bus stop there or something? I looked at the trains from TVC to CAPE and the only train after 9:30 AM is the one I mentioned in my thread...so unless there is something to do in TVC for about 5 hours...

You can go walk around Tvm city, the station is quite close to the central areas. Take a walk to East fort or Statue Jn. and catch an auto back to the station.

Not sure about the train timings, buses to the Cape are next door the station. They tend to be crowded, train would be better.

I checked in My "Southern Zone" Hardcopy Railway timetable [For Passenger trains] and got the following info:

1 . Passenger Train 377 [ Frequency Daily] Starts from TVC @ 10:50 am and reach NagerKoil JN @ 13:10 [ In reality it will reach around 12:45 I think as there is added time as usual for the destiantion station to make up the time loss in between] and you could take a bus to Kanyakumari from Nagercoil and it's just 18 kms or so and bus frequency is More in this route!

2. Express train 1081 [ Mumbai - Kanyakumari express] [ Frquency Daily] Dep @ TVC : :09:45 Kanyakumari Arrival : 12:10 [ Even though it appears neck-to-neck still due to the Distance it's covering it might be possible to catch this train even if this is delayed by 15 minutes or so ]

Now, Based on my Travelling experience, I could say, From Trivandrum Railway station, bus stand is very near / walkable distance [ Thambanoor Bus stand] from where you could get buses to Nagercoil [ Frequency is more] and you could take another bus from Nagercoil to Kanyakumari !

And If you have time & could hire a taxi , you could cover all the tourist places enroute between TVC & KK [ Thirparapu Falls, PAdnamabapuram palace and Suchindram temple] ! These places are very difficult to cover in Public tranport atleast the first two I couild say !

Hope this helps !

Happy Travelling !

OK - Now, I am really wanting to see the tourist destinations in between TVC and CAPE...

Any estimate on how far is TVC from the CAPE? In addition, anybody know contact info for any reliable taxi drivers that I can hire so save myself from touts?

Thanks so far for the help provided!

Most probably you can catch the Mumbai - Kanyakumari Express at 9:45 for a train trip. It is more likely to be late than the Rajdhani Express.

If you want to go by bus and visit Padmanabapuram Palace, you have to get down in a village (sorry, can't remember the name at the moment, but will look for it) and get a small private bus or an auto to the palace. Just ask the people in the bus or the driver, they'll tell you where to get down. The bus passes Suchindram, so you can just get down there and visit the temple (it's closed at noon!)

There are plenty of taxis in front of the railway station in Trivandrum, can't tell you whether some of them are touts. Usually the auto drivers in Trivandrum are very fair compared to other cities, so you should find honest taxi drivers, too.

I THINK, AFTER TVC, YOU SHOULD GO TO KOLLAM WHICH IS JUST ONE AND HALF HOUR DRIVE FROM TVC. FROM THERE YOU SHOULD NOT MISS TO GO TO BACK WATER IN KERALA WHICH IS FROM KOLLAM-ERNAKULAM. ITS THE BEST THING TO EXPERIENCE. IT WILL BE YOUR LIFE LONG MEMORY.
BESIDES, YOU SHOULD NOT MISS A PLACE CALLED VERKALA. WHICH IS HAVING NICE BEACH.
I AM BASED IN MUMBAI BUT IF YOU NEED ANY KIND OF HELP IN KERALA, JUST MAIL ME. I WILL BE OF ANY HELP TO YOU. YOU ARE WELCOME.
ENJOY YOUR JOURNEY TO INDIA.

Safest way would be by train. Netravati is late quite often (sometimes 2 hours), so better check different options! If you are really stuck in Trivandrum for the night, don't get worried, there are many accomodations around.
