Coonoor
Hi All,
I am going to be in Coonoor from the 6th to the 9th, inclusive. Any suggestions on what to do. i would want to keep as simple as possible and not too hectic. Guess the Toy train to Metupalyam should be fun (upwards to downwards?). Maybe a day in ooty (which i can skip if there is any other place more fun to be). So help me out here. Thank you. |

Climbing up from MTP to Coonoor was more fun for me than getting down to MTP.

I wonder what kind of fun you're looking for?
Ooty is the big centre. Please note that it will be noticably colder than Coonor. Wellington if you want to see army camps. There's a peak which is the highest in the Nilgiris, but I forget the name, nearby, which is probably worth the trip. It was foggy when I went so new view . To my wife, it was magic to be walking in the clouds. To me, as a Brit, it was just fog!

The train takes five hours from Mettupalayam to Ooty. It is only two or so by road.

Thanks for all the inputs. I just got back from Coonoor and its a fantastic place. I took the short ride in the toy train to ooty. But the less i think of ooty the better. I could see nothing but lays packets and plastic bottles everywhere. Even doddabetta was little bit of an eyesore. We need to clean up ooty and preserve it. Its too good a place to let it go to rot.
On the other hand Coonoor was charming and such a nice place to hang out. Thanks for all the suggestions. |

Thanks for the feedback.
Regrettably, littering is common-place in India. Not just on the personal level. My newspaper has featured articles about a lake near here which, despite being a source of drinking water for many, and protected by law, is used as a dumping ground. The authorities will do nothing about it, and local people, standing guard one night, recorded a number of government vehicles among the many trying to dump their content. One truck was laden with dead flourescent tubes. |

Any suggestions for a place to stay in Coonoor? Rs 500ish. Have stayed in Ooty a few times, would like to try Coonoor next visit. Where did you stay?

Surely Veerapan's famous forest was in Andrha?
Yes, I went on a day drive from Ooty to Mudamallai, and took a circular tour on the tourist van. We didn't see much in the way of animals, but I still found it a lovely day out for the scenery --- and return to the warmth after the cold of Ooty. |
