From Coimbatore there are presently 2 operational roads to Ooty, both will take about 5 hours, perhaps less if you start really early. One is via Mulli / Manjoor and the other is Mettupalayam / Kotagiri. If you are interested you can contact our regular drive Jagadeesan in Coimbatore at +91 94423 70007 and get a quote, he can help you with Mudumalai as well.

That's the most circuitous route when compared to the normal and faster Coimbatore-Coonoor-Kalhatty Ghat Road-Mudumalai.

To OP:-

If at all you would like to reach mudumalai from Coimbatore and wanted to avoid Hill driving [UP &Down of Nilgiris], you can take Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam-Ch.Nagara-Gundlupet-Bandipur NP -Mudumalai NP. Again this route is the viable alternative provided you purposefully want to avoid Climbing up & Down of Nilgiris.

In Mudumalai, if you want secluded, Calm , nice ,Foresty environment, Tamilnadu forest department's Guest houses are the best bet. They have many a rest houses in that area and some of them will be at totally isolated /Deserted place .

If you want to be very near to Mudumalai NP and looking for Budget option, you can try Hotel TTDC [Govt of Tamilnadu Hotel] which is just walkable from Mudumalai NP and as added bonus the rooms will be facing the Forest stream where you can see elephants taking bath [ Not Wild elephants but forest dept elephants].

If you want luxury, Comfort , you can try staying in Bokkapuram / Masinagudi area [3 kms from Mudumalai NP] where there are "N" number of Resorts.

Hope this helps

[QUOTE=pmvelu;896289].......normal and faster Coimbatore-Coonoor .......
To OP:-

Velu, right now the road between Burliar and Coonoor is not yet operational due to severe landslide damage. From Coimbatore, the two hill routes operating to Ooty right now are via Mettupalayam Kotagiri and via Geddai Manjur. I just went to the Nilgiris, end December though not to Ooty or Coonoor, but all the local drivers were saying so.

Ooty Kalhatty ghat Masinagudi is very much operational.

Yes, this is sadly still the case. From what I have been told the Kotagiri route has a lot of traffic these days. There is a slight deviation from this route which some users may not know of, though I am unsure of current conditions or updates.

The normal route is:
Mettupalayam -> Aravenu -> Kotagiri -> Kattabetu -> Ooty

The deviation is:
Mettupalayam -> Aravenu -> Bandishola -> Wellington(Barracks) -> Ooty

The route between Bandishola and Wellington can be done via Bettati or Sims park (upper Coonoor).

The route is the of most benefit for people going from Mettupalayam to Coonoor (and areas near there) as it is significantly shorter than going via Kotagiri town and Kattabetu.

Warning: On Google maps there is a complete fantasy second route shown between Coonoor and Kotagiri via some completely impossible topography! (Somehow linking via lower Aderley and Dolphins nose to Aravenu). This can be seen on: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,0.305901&z=12
The fantasy route is the yellow route linking Coonoor and Kotagiri. The only real (direct) route is the faint grey one to the left of the yellow one which goes via Kattabetu. Someone should really tell GoogleMaps that their digitisation has botched up!
