Which is preferable for a travel from Chennai to Vellore? A train or a bus. I need some info about the buses. One of my friend told that they start just opposite of the Chennai Central Railway station and takes less time than trains to reach Vellore, is that true?
....life is a journey.....and the journey is more important than the destination........

train is best !

Most easiest and fastest way is by trains. Kovai or brindavan express in the morning. They reach katpadi (2kms from vellore) in 2 to 3 hrs.

kovai is at 6.15 AM and bRindavan express is at 7.30 AM.

If you go by car, thre is a neat 4 lane higway till vellore. You can reach in 2 hrs

Thanks for the inputs. My friend said there is good bus service also which goes in approximately 2 hours. is that true?

Actually, I will be reaching Chennai Central at 5:15 p.m. in the evening and want to reach Vellore that night itself. That why the query. There are trains also in the evening but they are not giving reservation upto Katpadi as those are night trains with sleeper coaches. Another option is giving some money to a Coolee and have sure seats in General Compartment, that will do for a two hour journey. What you people say?

If there are good comfortable and fast buses, I will consider the bus option.

Bangalore Shatabdi would be a close call as my train, Coromondal Express reaches at 5:15. So, I will consider other options. I found many trains like Trivandrum Mail, Mangalore Mail, Nilgiri Express, etc. in late evening.

I wouldnt try going in a general compartment even if i get a seat. ive done it before, and a guy decided to sit on my lap through the nite..!! there a lot of provate bus operators opposite central station. try them out. or get an auto to CMBT, u'd have plenty of govt run buses from CMBT ,.. the roads are four lane and buses are real fast on that road

I would suggest that you go to Chennai Koyambedu bus terminal. There are plenty of buses to vellore.

Yes, This Circuit [Chennai -Vellore] has Very frequent bus service all through the day and atleast upto late evenings [ read 9 pm] . For Comfort, Try out SETC [Tamilnadu Express Buses When compared to TNSTC Normal buses] [They are Bangalore Bound
but based on the Occupancy they take Vellore bound passengers in Day time as well]

It will take around 3 hours atleast to Max 4 Hours !
