Chennai to Mamallapuram and Madurai...
Hi,
I'm arriving at Chennai Internationl Airport in a week at something painfully early like 5am and have a day to kill before I head to Madurai. I've done some research and Mamallapuram looks like a great place to unwind with the best way to get there being by prepay taxi from the airport? I have my train (Vaigal Exp) booked that will take me to Madurai the following day, from Egmore. I see that it would make more sense to board at Chengalpattu than Egmore, given the location of Mamallapuram. Whats the best way to get to Chengalpattu and would I be right in assuming Indian Railways don't mind you boarding at a later station from the one your ticket is booked for? Cheers! Luke |

To solve your problem, I think you need to contact the station master of the station from which you're supposed to board and change your boarding point to Chengalpattu. The enquiry booth at station/reservation centre should be of help.

Thats a real irritation, thanks for informing me. Unfortunately, my plan was to go nowhere closer to Chennai than the airport so I won't be in contact with a railway office. Maybe I could make the change before I get to Mamallapuram... I know that it is easy to get to Egmore by taking the train from Trisulam outside the airport (will this be running at 5am?) but how easy is it to get from Egmore to Mamallapuram? And also, are they frequent buses from Mamallapuram to Chengalpattu?

Chengalpattu, mamallapuram, egmore
From egmore, you again travel in train towards beach and get down at fort station (egmore-park-fort)[ So buy ticket for fort at tirusulam]
Broadway bus stand is at walkable distance from fort railway station. From broadway many buses start to mamallapuram. There are many buses plying between mamallapuram and chengalpattu. 108B between chennai and mamallapuram goes via chengalpattu only. Say, you don't get a bus to Chengalpattu from mamallapuram, you can go till thirukkazhukundram and from there you can get many buses to chengalpattu. |

Do not necessarily need to change boarding point to Chengalpattu. You can easily board the train from that place.
