We travelled in a Tata Sumo and for sure we turned right atleast 10 to 15 kms kms before tindivanam(As mohan asked the route for biking I thought of giving the higher end as I don't want him to miss out the short route ) ..Probably you are telling the main Road which is taken by TSTC buses (Express buses turm much before ...)The right which I mention has a small Railway crossing (where the rail man asks for 10 rs to open the gate -- Yes he always keep the gate closed and once you pay some money he opens it .. This is 4 years back anyway ) & for sure it's NH 45 !! ...

alternatively ,take a bus from Madras to Pondy<as u already know how to>,and take 1 from pondy to tiruannamalai(or a fast passenger train)

I'm in Chennai now and am going to soon make my way to Tiruvannamalai. As was suggested above I think I'm going to do it from Pondicherry. I've taken note of the Sesha Bavan Guest house as well as there is barely any guest-house information available and I was slightly paranoid about that after a bad late night arrival experience in Guwahati.
 I'm really liking the difference in the feel of south India thus far. Jon |

there is A/c deluxe buses available...volvo buses..but it will take nearly 14/15 hrs.
morning there is a train starting 0730 morning and reach trivandrum by 2100 hrs aproaximately....there is 2 a/c and 3 a/c coaches... |

I think you're confusing Tiruvannamalai with Thiruvanandapuram?
