Chennai, Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, Kochi

I am hoping to travel across Southern India from Chennai to Kochi over the course of a few days next month. It's a bit of a whirlwind trip, and I need to know if it's feasible. I'm considering hiring a car and driving as I'm imagining it's quicker than relying on buses or trains - don't worry, I'm not mad, and I have driven in India before - but am also wondering whether taxis between destinations are an affordable alternative. Any advice would be gratefully received.

The proposed itinerary is as follows:

Tuesday 8th

Late morning - arrive in Pondicherry

Wednesday 9th

Spend day in Pondy

Thursday 10th

Morning – car to Thanjavur (how long?)

Rest of day and overnight in Thanjavur

Friday 11th
Morning – Car to Madurai (how long?)

Rest of day and overnight in Madurai

Saturday 12th

Car to Cochin – 6 hours?!?

Overnight in Kerala

Also, any tips for the journey?

Hi plumbleboy,

From what I know,

Pondicherry to Thanjavur -- 4 hours
Thanjavur to Madurai -- 4 1/2 hours
Madurai to Cochin -- 6 hours

And by any chance is your name colin goodwin?
