Chennai Day-trips

A friend is just back from doing a 4-week course at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, as I will be doing in February. She told me that she reckons that the people who did a lot of travelling at the weekends got ill more often, as they were worn out from the course during the week (long hours) and never recovered at the weekends.

So, having decided not to travel much at the weeknd, I'm looking for suggestions for interesting things to do/places to go within Chennai and surrounding area, nowhere more than a couple of hours travel at most. Any recommendations (I'm sure there's loads)?

Cheers,

Scott

Why I read everywhere that for Kanchipuram a one-day tour from Chennai or Mamallapuram is enough, when there is plenty of temples and sari factories and shops to visit? Is it possible (and worthwhile) to spend the night in Kanchipuram?
