Can anyone recommend a good budget/midrange hotel in Tiruchirappalli

Hello Everyone,

This my fist entry to this forum and it will be my first trip to India. Basically, we are a 60+ years young couple from Australia fortunate enought to have a pension. We like to think we would spend around 2-3 months in southern India and arrive in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) in late Oct (hope I can get to pronounce that city's name at least before we arrive).
Upon arrival in Trichy we will need a place to stay for some days till we move on probably up into the hills around Ooty, Kodai and anywhere that we think might take our fancy.
Can anyone with first hand experience recommend a decent budget/midrange place in Trichy for, say around Rp 1000 a double room/night?

And, any suggestions on good places to visit and stay up in them thare hills? We aren't into discos, booze and the like anymore. We were once, but age has caught up with us and now we want/need periods of peace and tranquality, etc.

Any suggestions and room prices would be greatly appereciated.

Have pension will travel.

Garry

It's years since I've been in Trichy, but I stayed at the government-run tourist hotel, which was near the rail station and recall that it was clean and "okay." There are a lot of small restaurants in the area, and it was easy to get buses to the temple and other places I want to go.

welcom to india,
Orginally it was called tiruchinapally and the british felt the name was too long and they could not pronounce it easily and therefore it was shortened to trichy and today it is locally called as tiruchi.
Tamilnadu tourism called as TTDC runs quiet a lot hotels and they also have hotels at tiruchi, ooty and kodai. If you stay here for 3 consecative nights you will get a discount of 10 percent.

For the old Raj atmosphere you can't beat the Hotel Ashby. I spent a whole afternoon just looking at the doors.

Ho John and Jilie,
Sounds like you are flying Airasia from Kl to Trichy? We are - So cheap! We arrive in Trichy Nov 6 from Kl and hope to spend a few days/a week in Trichy then head up into the cooler hills for a month or so. So far we will probably head for the Hotel Ashby in Trichy then if necessary look around when we are actually on the ground. We probably wont bother booking ahead and if its full I'll consult my lonely planet guide from the back of a rickshaw and point the way
So where will you be heading for from Trichy? and if you are still in Trichy when we arrive let us know where you are and maybe we can meet up?

Nice food at the Hotel Ashby... it's got a bar, too, but bring along a woollie to protect yourself from the fierce aircon!

About an hour an a half away by car is The Bangala in the Chettinad area of Tamil Nadu. I stayed here a few years ago for several days, and just loved the slow pace, interesting area to explore, and fantastic food. (included)

http://www.thebangala.com/

You can call them once in India and see if their tariff has changed than the price quoted on the website.
