Question Budget advice for a month in Southern India

After receiving some good advice from you guys on when to visit India I am now after a bit more if possible

I am hoping to pick your brains on what amount of money I am likely to need for my trip.

I plan to fly into Chennai then spend a month travelling around Tamil Nadu and up to Goa. I am hoping to visit Mammallapuram, Pondicherry, Kodai, Kerala and maybe a couple more places, spending a week or so in Goa at the end of my trip.

I don't want to stay in any five star hotels or get taxis everywhere but I would like to stay in comfortable lodgings and don't want to have to stay in dorms all the time (hope that doesn't snotty ). I would like also like to have decent conditions when taking the train - bed (if travelling overnight), air con etc. I don't want to have to eat the cheapest food available but I am not expecting to dine on caviar every night either.

I have already budgeted for my flights and visa so I am looking into what I will need for trains, lodgings, food and of course beer (let's say two per day ).

I appreciate there are a lot of variables involved in this scenario but I am just trying to get a good idea so I can plan.

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

Joe

Well I reckon 400-600 rupees will get you decent, comfortable accomodation in most places in India. You may find that in some places like Mahaballipuram you can get comfort for much less than that.

Train travel is cheap and 200 rupees will get you a long way on a bus or train!

Foodwise well that's tricky but if your prepared to eat local food where the locals eat then a food budget of 100-120 is perfectly possible and even if you eat mostly at tourist restaurants it will still be possible to live on 200-300!!

Water is 10-12 rupees a liter a 300ml coke the same, Taxis and rickshaws are also cheap at 6-12 rupees a km, depending on mode of transport!!
