Best: Madurai or around Chennai/Mamallapuram

First, our background: we are interested in photography, we like the colors, people and scenic India. We enjoy holy places, Sadhus, pilgrims, etc. We have a good budget.

We have one week to allocate in Tamil Nadu, we really want to go to Madurai and see the temples. We are driving in from Munnar and flying out from Chennai so we thought about spending some time in Mamallapuram also. Which place is nicest, Manurai or Chennai/Mamallapuram. What can we possibly see besides these places? Any nice small villages around Madurai?

I've never been to Chennai or Mahabalipurem, But I've been to Madurai and it's highly reccomended. Not to be missed imho.

There are some nice temples outside of Madurai. You can find a little info about them here. Like Alagar Koil and a nice one that I can't remember the name. It's on top of a hill close to Madurai.
