I can tell about the Bangaore-Madurai-Kanyakumari route. Did this route January this year. So my update is from then, not current.
Bangalore- Salem: Very good road. That 210km can be easily done in 3 hrs.
Salem-Namakkal-Dindigul : Road was under construction with many diversions here and there but easily manageable.
Dindigul-Madurai : Work was not started in many places and so it had the old road for some of the section which was not in good shape.
Madurai-Kanyakumari : Similar state as Salem Dindigul. Lots of diversions but easily manageable at day time.

To go to Rameswaram you need to come back to Madurai to take the Madurai-Rameswaram route. There is one road from Kanyakumari to Rameswaram but what I heard is that road is not good. This may have changed now.

Here is a sample itinerary - though I think 10-12 days are more than enough.

Day 1 - Reach Madurai - check in at Hotel. See Madurai temples if there is time the same day, or can spend another day here.

Day 2 - Go to Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi. Night halt at Rameshwaram. If needed can spend another day here

Day 3 - Proceed to Kanyakumari - night halt there.

Day 4 - See kanyakumari - dont miss sunrise and sunset at the beach. Temples, and vivekananda rock. Also Thirivalluvar statue.

Day 5 - Can relax at kanyakumari or proceed back to Orissa

While returning they can visit Chennai as well and visit Mahabaleshwar etc.

These places can be covered very well by public transport. We (wifey and kuds) did this trip in Dec 08.

1. There is no direct train from Bangalore to Rameswaram. The trains from Madras to Rameswaram don't touch Madurai now. The Madurai-Ramewaram stretch is best done by bus. (3-4 hours)

2. Rameswaram, like any tourist spot, has an organized taxi system. If your group is small, you can even use autos. Visiting Danushkodi, etc. won't be a problem

3. There is an infrequent train from Bangalore (actually K R Puram) to Nagercoil. You may find it far more convenient to reach Madurai and use it as the base. (As you may know, the Kanyakumari Express from Bangalore is not a good option at all to travel to Kanyakumari - it takes too much time.)

4. There is a nice itinerary a few posts above. You may follow that more or less.

5. There are many trains between Madurai and Kanyakumari/Nagercoil - more to Nagercoil. Based on the itinerary, you can choose the train. (About 5 hours) Nagercoil is just about 20km from Kanyakumari - you can find many buses/taxis/autos for the trip.

6. Kanyakumari as such is a very small place; if you stay in any of the tourist hotels, you can simply walk to all points of interest.

7. If you want to visit places around Kanyakumari - Sucheendram, etc. I would suggest that you arrange a taxi from Nagercoil. The taxi scene at Kanyakumari is a rip-off.

Hope this helps on the travel part.

A small, but significant, correction to my post above.

There *is* a direct train from Bangalore to Rameswaram. It is a special train and runs once a week. There is also a special train between Nagercoil and Bangalore.

As for the order, it doesn't really matter. Rameswaram is roughly east of Madurai, while Kanyakumari is south of Madurai. There is very poor direct connectivity between Rameswaram and Kanyakumari - and the best route is via Madurai.

Ideally, one should look at the train schedules and availability and make the order accordingly.

Just to be very specific, any of the following combinations would work, and there are more!

1. Bangalore - Rameswaram, Rameswara-Madurai, Madurai-Kanyakumari, Nagercoil- Bangalore
2. Bangalore - Rameswaram, Rameswaram - Kanyakumari (via Madurai) , Knayakumari - Madurai, Madurai - Bangalore
3. Bangalore-Madurai, Madurai-Rameswarm, Rameswaram - Kanyakumari (via Madurai), Nagercoil- Bangalore

4. Bangalore-Madurai, Madurai-Rameswarm, Rameswaram - Kanyakumari (via Madurai), Kanyakumari - Bangalore (via Madurai)

and so on....
