Auroville
Hi all! I'm from Mumbai. This summer I'd love to make a trip to Auroville, Puducheri. I'd like some travel tips and also about economical places to stay. Are there any other places nearby which can be included in my plan? Please suggest.
Thanks, |

You can stay at hotel Surguru(0413-239022) in Pondy. its clean and safe, but you may have to book in advance. pondicherry is teeming with hotels, you wont hav trouble findng a good one.
A 100 kn, 2hr drive south from pondy will take you to chidambaram, famous for the Nataraja temple and Pichavaram mangrove forest boat ride. And dont miss aurobindo ashram and Chunnambar island while at Puduchery |

I think it is a good idea for other readers interested to clarify that here is a mix-up going on between Pondicherry/Puducheri and Auroville. Pondy is a good base to visit Auroville if you just want a general idea of the public sight-seeing face of it (visitors' center and matrimandir). If you actually want to see more of AV you would have to stay there itself. Compared to Hotel Surguru (which has the best restaurant in Pondy for Tamil food) you could easily stay for less in a nice place in Auroville. Surguru is Rs 800 upward if memory serves, while a good place in AV would be Rs 300 upward. But there are no hotels in AV itself but only private guesthouses in often paradisical surroundings, yet some Indian guesthouse has come up on the way to it when you approach Kuilapalayam, where the AV bakery is.
If you are not visiting in peak tourist season (Xmas-March) and have at least 10 days, it is a good idea to spend the first night or two in Pondy, perhaps take the Aurobindo Ashram tour which includes a drive to Auroville, and then contact the Guest Service at Solar Kitchen in Auroville to get a room at AV itself. Online info re guesthouses here: http://www.aurovilleguesthouses.org/ phone Nr guest-service: http://www.aurovilleguesthouses.org/gs-service.php Preferable to Surguru for staying at Pondy is the Park Guest House with an Ocean view (for around Rs 500), or the New Guest House at one street up from Park, with excellent basic rooms for just Rs 100. Ask for dining room tickets at the reception, and you can go and eat 3 meals a day for just Rs 20 per day, at the Ashram Dining Room. Beware of exact timing, the Ashram is a mix of Indian with European standards. ![]() |
