Around Kodaikanal

Hi Folks,

Please suggest few places around Kodaikanal that can be covered in 3 days. We will be coming from Bangalore. Can Munnar, Thekkady be covered in 3 days or rather we should concentrate within limits of Kodai only.

3 days for all the places (munar / Kodai / Thekkady) will be tiresome and too much.

You have enough places in kodaikanal itself to see in three days.

First day, Go to places inside kodaikanal.

1. Coakers Walk
2. 500 years old tree (Not sure if its 500 or mroe)
3. Pine Forest
4. Guna Caves
5. Pillar Rock
6. Kodai Lake. Dont forget to go cycling around the lake. Its 5.5 Kms. You will enjoy if you dont rush

Second Day

Bary Jam Lake (No food available at that place as it is dense forest) If you can carry your food, you can choose a nice spot and sit there with your family and have a nice picnic)
Enroute to Bary jam lake you can see the following places
1. Silent Valley View
2. Thoppi Thooki Parai
3. Madhikettan Solai
4. Upper view of Barry jam lake
Then directly to Barry jam Lake. Spend a good amout of time there, but you got to leave before 3.30.
Permission is needed from the forest department and hence inform the cab drivers atleast one day in advance, so that they will arrange for the same. 100 rs is the fees for the permission.

Third & Last day

Lakshmi Temple enroute to Poomparai village
Rose Plantation facility enroute to poomparai village
Poomparai Village (Fully surrounded by mountains)
Poomparai Murugan temple(One of the oldest temple and very famous)
Dont miss to pull over and see the breath taking view
Kurinji Andavara temple in Kodaikanal.

Last day, Dont forget to buy Home made chocolates which is Kodai's speciality. If you want, you can also buy Fruits.

Do let me know if you need any other information. I have a fantastic contact (Gropup of Cab Driver) who will take you to all these places and will be of a good help.

Normally a local drop by cab will cost you 60 Rs.

With 3 days, dont even think beyond kodai..you will not enjoy it.

As other posters have mentioned spend time in Kodai. Go cycling around the lake. Go walking around the lake..

Also, Bary jam is a nice do...

Thanks bsprasad for so nice itinerary. What is the best way to arrive Kodai from Bangalore. Actually, we hail from Kolkata. Will meet up with buddies in Bangalore. We are not very sure of whether train or bus or hired cab to go from Bangalore? We are planning an overnight journey. My personal opinion is Tuticorin Express which goes upto Kodaikanal Road. What I had found from online resources that bus services in this route are basic, no VOLVO or Sleeper coaches.

Yes,

You are right. The bus services are Basic in this route.

You can take a train upto kodai road and from there you can either take a bus or hire a cab to kodaikanal.

Hi bsprasad,

As per your detailed itinerary, how far is these places from the town. Are there ample cabs or we have to hire one for entire 3 days? What are the rates? We are 4-5 people, all boys, bachelor. A Sumo/Bolero will suffice. Also would like to know if there are few short distance off beat hikes(4-5 hours)?

If you are 4-5 people, A qualis or Sumo will do.

How far is these places...

From Kodaikanal town the maximum distance you would travel for sightseeing will be 23 kms (Poomparai Village).

Otherwise every sightseeing place is in and around 10 -18 kms circle only.

Cabs should be hired on a daily basis and not on a continuos basis. Ample cabs are available.

Yes, There are few short distance hikes. You need a proper guide for that.
