Hi MGP,
In Thanjavur I can recommend Hotel Ideal River View In Madurai Hotel Germanus Day Inn or Hotel Supreme ( just in front of Meenashki temple). I prefer Gernmanus but Supreme has a nice resto in rooftop with view of the temple Can find hotel address/web/mail in google Jorge |

Hotel supreme, Park inn & college house in & around Town hall road are good places to stay, relatively speaking. While Germanus is a good one too, it's a bit far if you're planning on visiting the temple. It's on the By-pass rd, Mappilai Vinayagar theatre bus stop. Getting back into the city is easy, as any bus marked 'periyar bus stand' will take you right into the city.
BTW, the auto drivers have a tendency to fleece & also being abusive(irrespective of nationality)[1]; here's my 2 paisa worth of tips. If you're coming by train, all except germanus are just outside the station. Cross the road, Get into Townhall rd & you're pretty much next to college house restuarant & lodge(excellent coffee & idlis). There are a couple of lodges next to each other, so you can always tramp from one to other if one is full & you haven't booked before. If you're brave, you can take the bus to Germanus; Get in to periyar bus stand which is about 200 metres from the railway station(another fav. trick of the autos is to offer to take you to the bus stand, take a roundabout route and charge your Rs100-150). Inside the bustand, ask any bus driver[2] for Mappillai vinayager theatre and he'll reel out 10-15 bus numbers. Be warned, that's the direction of villages and buses will be crowded. Ticket costs about Rs3 (upper limit). Now, autos will try to rip you at the Railway station. It should be no more than Rs 50(upper limit) to Germanus days inn. There are 2 ATMs near the inn, one HDFC & the other GTB(now taken over by some other bank). I'm not too sure whether they had the cirrus logo on them. -- 1. They're not racist, they hate everybody equally. 2. There is a time-keeper office in one of the terminuses where you'll see a chap with a pad. Ask him, who'll tell you the buses too. |

I agree with Jorge and all, the Hotel Supreme is a great mid-range choice.
Even if you don't stay there, don't miss the special "Dosa Nights" at the rooftop restaurant. I put some info about this place in the "Hotels" section. |
