I just came back from a 2 weeks trip to south India. In Madurai I stayed at Madurai Residency Hotel. It was a great place. You can check their rates at http://www.madurairesidency.com/tariff.html

I had a super classic room (with a/c) for 1000 rupees a day, which was very comfortable. They have non a/c room for 420. Actually I did not use the a/c when I went to bed, as I didn't like the noise. I think the ceiling fan is enough to cool if you will be there in winter.

Madurai is a very interesting place. Although vendors are agressive, people in the neighborhood were very nice. On one festival evening I walked around the big temple, some people invited me join their ritual at a small temple, the priest prayed for me and gave me some sweet rice candy, then I sat on the curb watching children play firecracker with the neighbors. It was one of the beautiful moments that I will always remember.

Have a great trip!

in ooty, try ~INDHU NIVAS~ 6km from ooty to mysore road.maintained by indhu photo industry.very very nice and quit place.they charged rs375 per day.but equal quality for rs.750.you can also arrange food in this nivas

in kodaikkanal, try ~YOUTH HOSTEL~ near by cookers walk.very good location to view down side of the hills.they charged around 300 -500 range type rooms available.2kms from town.

in madurai, plenty of hotels available on each and every road.so,you just walk and find you decide accordingly for your taste.
