Accomodation in Kodaikanal

Hi,

Going to Kodai for the first time. Is it the right time to be there??
Can you suggest any good budget accomodations within Rs 500/day?

Any recommendations on places to eat would be welcomed..

Near the Lake

There was Hotel Swati near the lake with acco below rs 400. in 1998. a lot of name changes take place in such places for God knows what reasons (income tax?).

Altho now Kodai is crowded[compared to 1998], the school vacation has ended. No reason to suspect that it will be so crowded that you will not get room.

I don't know about Kodai this time of year, but the Greenlands Youth Hostel used to be a cheap if necessarily somewhat basic place with arguably some of the best views in town if it's not foggy, probably isn't this time of year (although, if the monsoon is on...?) It's situated right on a hillside/edge of valley (hard for me to tell as it was consistently foggy when I visited in winter). It's a little bit out of the way if I remember correctly but still within easy walking distance. According to this 2003 hotel listing it doesn't seem to have changed much. IM forum leader AlanD has a pic of the view up here. I liked the place, even if it was very cold in winter, no matter how many blankets we were provided with.

I went on the 15th of this month for the first time...really a good place and there was not much crowd ...literally no crowd so you will find rooms with ease.

we drived in the morning from madurai and returned by 7pm.It's 3 hrs drive from madurai by taxi (120kms) and it costed us Rs 1700 (ambassador car) if you are taking a qualis/sumo means it will cost you Rs 2100.

We had food in hotel astoria & hotel annaporna, both near the Bus stand and the lunch at annaporna is very good..

If you are going by bus, a note of caution.
The tickets counter opens in the morning and all the tickets will be sold out for the next 2 days or so. ( I think they sell only about 30% of the tickets like this). After which you will be forced to come on the day of travel and the rip off starts. The rates will be 2 to 3 times more than the regular price and all are sold by hawallahs.
So if you are spending a couple of days, first thing you need to do after going there would be to reserve your return journey tickets.

If you go near Coakers walk - there are several hotels.

Go to the place where Hotel Kodai International is there. This place is good and affordable. In the same road - there are several economical hotels / lodges.

You can eat food anywhere - don't miss the home made chocolates. They are yum.

You can have the lunch buffee at the Carltons Hotel. They have some great desserts.

Check my Kodai travelogue on IM - It is informative and have given details of hotels where u can stay.

For Kodaikonal, june is considered as off season and peak season starts from end of june. So the hotel rates will be set accordingly.
Don't go for the hotels that are shown on internet. they are very much different in reality. So find the hotel then and there only.

I would recommend Kodai Resorts near the coakers walk...you can also check out the nearby hotels, you can get acco on off-season rates.

Check out for more details

Yes, unless it's changed buses are the only way up there (don't know about private cabs) and there's plenty of them. It's yr typical hair-raising experience but otherwise fine & a scenic ride.

Greenlands is at the end of Coaker's Walk btw.

better get down at dindigal

Hi,

It would be better to get down at dindigal junction [a major stop] as there are better bus facilities from dindigal than from kodai road. theoretically kodai road is nearer to kodaikanal, but the buses start from dindigal and you may not find a seat at kodai road which will lead to more problems. You can take an auto to dindigal busstand from railway station for abt Rs20-25.

taking a bus is way cheaper than car/van. but u wont be able to make stops for photos/pics.

Further if u get into a bus make sure you take the seats on the left side of the bus [with reference to the driver's seat and facing forward], so u get to see lots of 'views' of hillscape. Avoid the other side, as all u will get to see are some rocks. On your way down from kodaikanal, try the right side of bus. hope u get my point.

enjoy ur time in kodai.
