It depends entirely where you start from! It takes me approx three hours to do a relaxed drive to Pondy, but I am to the South of the city and won't have any city traffic to delay me. A taxi driver will drive much faster!
I think you should take your car(s) on an individual day/job basis. You don't need a car to tour around Pondy; the best way of doing that is a bicycle rickshaw! Seriously, it is slow and relaxed, and Pondy is a small place.

So would it then be better to just have a chennai taxi service while we are in chennai and a pondi taxi service pick up from chennai - drop off pondi then individually hire taxis from pondi for drop off to chennai?

You always have to cover the round trip; it doesn't make a great deal of difference whether you have a Chennai car take you Pondy or a Pondy car come and collect you!
Any Chennai travels company will sort it for you, but if you want an English-speaking driver you must specify that. Visitors tend to forget that these drivers spend most of their time driving locals around. If you want a Pondy car, look for posts by member 'atala' --- there is a company he recommends. For the airport, you can either get your hotel/guesthouse to pick you up or you can go to one of the pre-paid booths. When I was last there there were three booths, and they do not all charge the same price! |

Dear machadinha,
Thanks for reply, and sorry for replying so late. I'm relieved to hear various statements. It helped my journey very much. Though I'll take a taxi to Auroville, I'll bus when I go around south-India. Thanks again Choropie |

Choropie, do be sure to let us know about your trip.
Even if you need IndiaMike help while you are there, you have only to find an internet cafe! |
