Hello everyone,
Been searching through this site about Madurai hotels, but... Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Madurai? I am going to stretch the budget so I can treat myself to a fairly decent night's sleep in a nice hotel for one night! I've checked out TM Lodge's website they look good, anyone stayed there? Also, is the Taj Garden Retreat just a bit too posh and or expensive for a backpacker? many thanks ![]() |

In town I have stayed several times at the Hotel Northgate, which is one of the best values I have found in India--spotless and cheap, good rooftop restaurant. It's across from American College, and so out of the congestion of the temple area and train station, though you can get to the temple easily in an auto rickshaw. The Northgate was about 800 rupees for an air-con single a few years ago. You can have all the comforts of a decent room without having to pay a lot. |

I have just been to Madurai and stayed at the Madurai Residency - http://www.madurairesidency.com I was in the in the Family A/c rooms and we had 3 rooms in all and they were all good and clean. Rooms are quite big too. Front desk staff were friendly and helpful. A word of caution if you are a light sleeper and noise disturbs you. The aiturm (sp?) is such that voices kind of float up to the rooms so try and get as high a floor as possible. I also hired transportation from the company at the hotels Travel Desk - a guy called Shekar. The vehicle was clean and comfortable for our journey to Kumarakom (via an overnight stop in Kumily/Periyar). The driver Vijay Kumar was a nice guy though shy but his driving was spot on and safe. I also have the contacts for a lovely lady guide who was good and very smiley and made the tour of the temple enjoyable. If you need costs details etc. let me know and I will dig them out. Hope that helps. |

Ohhh ... and if you are anywhere near the evangelical Church (forgot the name) be prepared for a blast of weird synthesizer organ music early in the morning - think it was 4am !!! The music was kind of spooky and a bit weird - dunno why but it reminded me of some music I hear while watching a documentary of North Korea's great leader Kim watching a parade !!
But then its South India where they certainly do things differently ![]() |

I stayed two nights at the Taj Garden Retreat. They do a great scrambled egg! Apart from that I didn;t think that the food was as good as it should be in such an expensive place.
It is in the hillls outside the city and you get a great view of the plain and the city. It is away from the city pollution. It is very beautiful and the rooms are great. Yes, I think it is a nice hotel for a treat.

I would be very interested in a good guide in Madurai, could you please help with information. I'm planning a trip end of December or early Jan, with Spanish friends.

If you are looking for a budget hotel..Jenny's residency will be good. It is close to the temple.
when in Madurai, definitely make a trip to Kodaikanal. |

We stayed at the Supreme. It's worth paying the extra for a room on the higher floors overlooking the temples. They also have an excellent rooftop restaurant.
