Women's Cricket World Cup 2009 - Venue?
Hey there,
Anybody have any thoughts on the next Women's Cricket World Cup to be held in March 2009. The venue has not been decided as yet but apparently it is between Australia and India. India last hosted the tournament in 1997 which was one by the Aussies. Australia have not hosted the World Cup since 1988 when they beat England in the Final at the MCG. For the record here is a list of the venue and winners of the past World Cups: 1973 Host: England. Winner: England 1978 Host: India. Winner: Australia 1982 Host: New Zealand. Winner: Australia 1988 Host: Australia. Winner: Australia 1993 Host: England. Winner: England 1997 Host: India. Winner: Australia 2000 Host: New Zealand. Winner: New Zealand 2005 Host: South Africa. Winner: Australia I would love the Aussies to host the next one because it would be a huge boost for the sport in this country and would increase the number of young girls wanting to take up the sport (especially if they were to retain the title). Unfortunately the World Cup in South Africa last year was shown only on Foxtel (not 'free to air' television) which would have given them a much larger audience. One player who will be sorely missed is the greatest female to play the game in the history of women's cricket - Belinda Clark. She has retired from cricket and taken up the role of Manager of Cricket's Commonwealth Bank Centre of Excellence in Brisbane last September. Anyway, the Indian ladies will be in Australia (Adelaide) next month to play the Aussies in 3 ODIs and 1 Test. Cheers, Putty

Hopefully Indian girls will enjoy their trip to Australia. They will be very confident after their recent win in the Asia Cup! Good luck. Putty |

Hi Sadhuji & Ali,
Thank you for that link to website Sadhuji - heaps of great info there. Another good website for women's cricket is www.cricketwoman.net . I'm hoping to visit Nasik from Mumbai on my next visit. Cheers. And Ali, I'm sure you're girls will do very well out here. Mithali Raj is a fine player. It would be great to get a list of women's cricket teams in India so that I can try and catch some action on my next trip (March 2007) for 4 mths. I am currently watching a 20/20 game on TV between Australia and South Africa from Brisbane. Aussies 209 from 20 overs, SA 0/4 off 1.3 overs. Thanks again, Putty |

Hi Ali. Yes, I have played cricket since I was 12 years old - for a club called Altona North CC here in Melbourne. I bat and bowl left-handed. My team plays in the One Day Competition of the Victorian Women's Cricket Association - http://vwca.cricketvictoria.com.au.
Very sorry to hear your family didn't support your cricket career - it's wonderful you got a chance to go to England to play. Cricket is not only a great game to play but a wonderful way to make friendships. I love to read cricket books too - enjoyed reading "Sachin: The Story of the World's Greatest Batsman" by Gulu Ezekiel. Cheers, Putty |
