Resources are not so limited we have to make a choice in this one, and, in fact, the problem behind both of these things is the same, and is one of civic sense.

It does not have to be a choice!

Disclaimer: I hate crackers, but I have to admit to enjoying fireworks generally, and I will be up on my terrace for Divalli, not adding to them, but enjoying those all around.

What more? While suggesting this for Diwali, it is encouraged in all occassions like New Year Eve, Marriage, etc. How comical !?!
I do not agree with your idea of right or wrong issues, I'm afraid.
I'm not supporting pollution by piling waste, which is not only
very "disturbing", but is also a potential health hazard.
This also stems from the typical Indian mindset of "I'll do
whatever I want, -- to hell with others"! This needs to be
addressed too.

However, I fail to see how this diminishes the importance of
addressing the very real, and immediate health risks due
to firecrackers. And all this because of the misguided idea of
fun of some people at the expense of others. What right does
one have to put others' healths (and even lives) at risk,
even for "one day"? Have you ever tried bursting firecrackers
in the midst of a residential neighbourhood in the USA?

And we haven't even talked about the immeasurable torture the
animals have to live through in this holy land of vegetarians!

Also, who has encouraged use of firecrackers in all occasions
"while suggesting this for Diwali"? Aren't you contradicting
yourself when you'd claimed this was just an one-day-a-year
affair? The firecracker menace happens almost year round, and
has to be eradicated, just like the piles of waste.

We have Nov 5th in UK, with people having firework parties on either of the adjacent weekends as well, along with an inclusion of the period between Divalli and 5 November when, in an area with an Indian community, there will be fireworks most nights. Some controls had been instituted the last time I was there for that period, which is a few years ago.

Come India around 14-17 oct 2009 and you will see firecracker at every street.
Blowing coconut. lol
We used to fix a small chocolate bomb inside a coconut, make it a time bomb using scent sticks and throw them in pond.

But now i hate crackers. I only light candles in Diwali.

That's fireworks as opposed to firecrackers, right?

Same with me! I do like watching noiseless fireworks. I even used
to like the smell of the noxious fumes, -- gave rise to nostalgia!
However, livinhimalayas' condition was an eye opener.

What a response! Great...

Few quick things: When I refer resources, the effort in the campaigns... Smoking is far more serious, but not a single country is willing to ban it! (When it comes to not only pollution, putting other's health at risk!)

#2: What used to be for only Diwali has now become, all other occasions except Diwali (New Year, Indepence Day in US, after almost each American Football/Basketball/Softball event, cricket matches, etc).

#3: I still feel spending for literacy, living in harmony with nature, eliminating corruption, etc. are much more important than spending so much effort on "crackers on Diwali" (read... only Diwali) as an issue.

Blurred definitions here. When I'm referring to "crackers" I'm talking specifically about the kind of firework which is chained series of bangers, that just produces a series of ear-splitting bangs (and a lot of smoke of course, and a ridiculous amount of litter). When I'm talking about fireworks, I mean stuff that may have fizzes, whizzes and even occasional bangs, but is essentially a visual experience.

For years I used to do that too, watch it on the TV . Best way of enjoying it without ending up in the hospital

One year while I was in teh hospital, another patient came in with the same problem as I she was a few years younger and the smoke from the crackers had initiated an asthma attack for her too. She came in when her condition had gone beyond cure and died gasping for breathe on the bed next to me. I thanked god then that I was aware of my own condition well enough to have rushed to the hospital before it was too late.
