Probably will open a can of worms by saying this but we are not designed to play any sort of physical sports
. Definitely not until we give up vegetarianism. If there was a world cup for doing taxes etc, then I would confidently put my bet on the Indian team. On the bright side, Indian teams are known to do well in mathematics olympiad, it is a sort of non-physical olympics!! On a serious note, there was a very good article on bbc once that basically drew a parallel between India and Brazil. Both countries play only one sport well (India probably cricket and Brazil definitely soccer). The guy's analysis was that this dominance of one sport kills any opportunity for other sports. Brazil just like India manages not to win a single medal in the olympics . |

India used to be a power in Asia somewhere till the early 70's, the oil money then bought the gulf countries good coaches and they took over till Korea and Japan came along. I think the Indian cricket board could give the football board some of it's revenues to improve football in India.

All are cricket test nations who also rank much higher than India in Fifa' rankings New Zealand would also be higher if the OFC competitions were up to the standard of AFC: This is highlighted by the number of NZ players involved in European club competition. India has the potential to develop a good national team, however this is hampered by the relatively low quality organised football at national and grassroots level. It needs investment, time, astute marketing and a bit of luck (such as the a prolonged drop of form by the national cricket team )The good news for any future qualification to the World Cup is the low number of genuine qualification contenders in the AFC division. (Although this has been made harder by Australia's defection from OFC.) The achievements of the USA and Japan football/soccer development model would be a good starting point. |

India withdrew from participation in the 1954 world cup finals after being refused permission to play barefoot.

They're currently raked 117th in the world by fifa. Hong Kong and Palestine are joint 115th. New Zealand are 118th.

It was actually 1950 when they withdrew. Personally, I think India is quite far. I think they are as far from qualifying (or maybe more) than we (the US) are from winning the whole thing. I think both will happen in my lifetime (next 50-60 years). But in Asia there are at least 15 teams better than them, and right now Asia only has 4-5 spots. India only started to attempt to qualify was 1986. There they fell 2 points short of advancing out of the first round. After that they would have had to win 2 sets of 2 game series. They didn't try in 1990. In 1994, they finished last in their first round group, and in 1998 they finished second to last in the first round group. In 2002, they did their best. They almost got out of the first round, finishing 1 point behind and only had one loss. This past year it was more of the same as before, as they finished in 2nd to last place and 14 points behind. Asian Cup qualifying as been the same. I think that India has to use the strategy that other up and comers have used. They need to use NRIs or PIOs. Also, they need to set progressive goals. First, they need to have a goal of getting past the first round of qualifying by 2014 or 2018, and also possibly an Asian Cup qualification during that time. Then after that they can realistically think about qualifying. India reminds me of the US soccer program in the 1960s. We had success previously, but the game wasn't homegrown. We didn't have the soccer institutions or infrastructure. Then we slowly developed all of that, and qualifed in 1990 for the first time in 40 years, and we are slowly improving. I think India can do the same thing. I heard that among the younger generation soccer is more popular than cricket, and the reception to the World Cup has not persuaded me otherwise. The Indian love for the game is there. It certainly did surprise me. India has the potential to qualify for the World Cup, but they need to develop the infrastructure and to set logical goals.

India will make it easily if they create a professional league and start paying players some real money. Given the boom in the advertising I am surprised the football franchise is not growing rapidly like cricket has.
