Taekwando is everywhere. My boy just earned his black belt in that. I must admit I prefer Aikido. I have heard of Aikido in India but not in Chennai. Maybe Nick knows how to roll..

You are from Chennai, you say. Holidays, you say. Student, I presume.

Ask your acquaintances, read the classifieds or google, is what I would do. A travel forum is unlikely to help too much, even though I am constantly surprised here, so who knows.

If you check here for "India" only, it suggests there's an aikido school in Auroville (and several others elsewhere in India): http://www.aikiweb.com/search/index.html . Ah look they have a web page of course, they claim to be strictly amateurs btw (as in not affiliated to any official organizations), but they say some decent teachers pass by there or work with them though, so this needn't stop you: http://auroville.org/art&culture/mar...rts/aikido.htm. They (or others in Auroville) seem to offer other martial arts courses as well, linked to from there.

You'll realize learning any martial art over a (school) holiday will be impossible, but it can be a fun start. You'd probably want to move out to Auroville for the time being to pursue this. Little point though (except for a bit of fun or by way of introduction again) if you won't be able to follow up on it, I'd look for something that you have a chance of continuing over the years if it takes your fancy (although there's nothing to stop you from moving from one tradition to another. They're just all very different, although the "feel" or certain techniques may [or may well be not] somewhat similar.)

The question (also on other traditions) naturally gets asked from time to time, so search this forum for "aikido" or "martial arts" or something. And as the Capt. says, keep an eye on local advertizements, search the web, ask one of those schools (even a boxing one or whatever) about other schools they know of, etc. India has several martial arts of its own that would interest me.

Well, good luck with it.

I see kids walking on my street wearing what I ignorantly assume to be karate or judo kit --- I'm sure there must be no trouble in finding classes.

Asking a gym might be another good idea.

I think its a case of getting away from the computer and out on the street!

(Although I' start with google!)
