Swimming pools
Swimming pools
Hello,
I am going to be in India for the next few months working on my thesis for grad school. Does anybody know where there is a good ,clean 25m or 50m pool for lap swimming. I have only been able to find one and its in Mumbai. I don't want to stay in any of the major cities. It doesn't really matter where I locate myself as I can do my writing anywhere but in the mountains or on the coast would be best but a place to swim laps is pretty crucial to keeping my head clear.
Thanks ,
Roger

Are you choosing your location by 'swimming pool' criteria? If so then I suggest the mountains will be kinder as far as weather goes (monsoon, heat in those months on the plains etc.) and what you could do is look in one of the guidebooks with wide coverage for accommodation and check out which big hotels for the area have a swimming pool. Most of them will let outsiders especially foreigners (bit unfair on the locals I think) use their pools for a fee which may range from 50 rupees to around 250. You might even get a special deal if you are going to be a regular.
I did see a swimming pool on the drive up to Mussoorie at a flash resort...

25 m or 50 m lap pool
25m or 50m Lap pools are in big cities ONLY. Mumbai has around seven.
Even the star hotels do NOT have such big pools.
Mountains again, NO pools of that size .... very small ones.

Does the size of the pool matter? You just go up and down more often, don't you??? I used to be a champion swimmer (long ago) and my life revolved a lot around swimming pools so i understand how you would need one - where I live now I think the biggest would be around 18 metres in length (flash hotel one) and i used it a lot before we got the a/c. It wasn't deep but you could do your laps no problem!

There is one @ chowpatty beach, Mafatlal bath. It is 50 mtrs (one lap) in length. However it's only for members. They do allow non members as guest on Members Card. I recently learnt swimming there.
Ronak.
Ronak.
Do a search of lap pools.
I did a quick one of lap pools in Goa and found these.
www.kenilworthhotels.com/goa/facts.htm
www.siolimhouse.com/about_us.htm
Also the Leela in Mobor, Goa has one
And this in Hardwar in north India
http://www.concordtravels.com/ananda-spa-resort.html
But these are expensive resorts. Don't know your budget but you can probably pay a small fee to use it.
But just google Lap Pools in India or Goa, etc.

Large swimming pools are very few and far between. Most pools are located at private members clubs in major cities or at the more upmarket hotels (which can work out pretty expensive). You could base youself in Goa which would be more relaxed and where there are more hotels with pools or alternatively the sea. Trouble is monsoon will be starting in about 2 months and most of the beach life in Goa will be shut.
Hope this helps.

Here is the location for a public pool in Bangalore (Ulsoor)
12 59 02.50 77 37 19.65
you can copy and paste the coordinates in Google Earth for a visual
Many 5 star hotels will let you use the pool/SPA for a fee. But, not all their pools will meet your standards

Nice pool at the Arunai Ananda hotel in Tiruvannamali (Tamil Nadu). Not a lap pool but surprisingly long lap possible across the length. (My daughter swims laps and she was happy with it.) Hotel is not too pricey and food is good, too. Quiet atmosphere. Don't know how it will be in monsoon season as we were there in February.
Also good pool at Ideal River Resort in Thanjavur but that place is pricey.

Where in mumbai are you planning to live? How long are you planning to be in mumbai.Accordingly I can give you a few options for swimming pools. There are more options in the suburbs ie goregaon /malad
It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare dream of meeting your heart's longing.

You didn't read his post correctly! He doesn't want to be in Mumbai. He doesn't want to be in a big city. Read it again.

I've seen a lot of pools in the mountains, but very small ones. but if you're staying on the coast (better in a small, clean town)you can swim in the sea, right? much better sir!
