Summer is gradually closing in on us. It brings with it plenty of goodies – those bubbly, fuzzly, bottled wonder drinks promoted by celebrities from the large screen to the 22 yards pitch. All of them cry themselves hoarse trying to grab attention. While one of them invites you to climb the Everest, another wants you to buy a connection and join the leaders in attractive games. The days of the pig tailed girl clutching her glass of drink and pressing it to her cheek chanting ‘ILU’ seems to have retreated in the back ground. Even ICs do not enjoy the popularity that is enjoyed by the CDs. No, IC and CD, in this context do not mean what they are normally supposed to mean. IC is Ice Cream and CD is Cold Drink!
Summer is that time of the year when full day games, like cricket, need to abolished. The reason is de-hydration. We pity the batsmen when we see beads of perspiration dripping from their faces. Thanks to on-the-spot visuals, we can even see close ups of drops of perspiration accumulating on the tip of the batsman’s nose – and he, poor fellow, cannot take his eyes off the ball that is in the grip of the bowler. A misread means back to the pavilion. Likewise, fielders have to perform somersaults to stop runaway balls or jump sky high to hold on to a catch that is coming his way. The slightest error means dissection by the knowledgeable souls in the commentary box. They will let the whole world know that the time allotted in milliseconds, to latch to that catch, was sufficient for a player at this level of the game. Defying such hardships, they slog it out in the middle because sponsors have paid them in lakhs to prove that they can do it. Their intake of salt increases, they are able to perform incredible somersaults. Sitting in the comforts of our drawing rooms we egg them on and curse them when they fail to achieve milestones. They cannot surrender. Come what may, they are compelled to stick to the task, because, for them, large stakes are involved. as a team, aussies are the champs. there are separate ratings for batsmen and bowlers. the ratings keep on shifting depending on the performance of individual players in matches recognised by the controlling authorities. these are announced on espn/star sports regularly.
