The Broken Window
Unlike the previous cases this time the ball came through the kitchen window!
The cricket ball has broken the ventilation window glass panel and hit mom’s mango pickle bottle before fallen into the frying pan with sizzling oil. Pin drop silence at the small park behind our house. The boys expected the imminent nuclear missile launch from my house! Nothing happened. Minutes passed. There was a feeble knock at the front door. From that style of knock I could read the mind of the boy standing outside. The hero who hit the SIX into our house has arrived to receive the honor. “Ball….” The hero asked. They never say sorry. “Ball?” I asked “Sorry. It was a mistake” “Who hit the ball ?” I asked. I know this is the boy who hit it. That is the agreement among the boys. Anyone who hit the ball into the neighborhood homes has to go, plead and get the ball back. It’s the rule of the game. “The ball bounced and that is why it hit the window” the boy explained. “Who hit the ball ?” I repeated loudly. “me” the boy said softly. “Who’s son is that ?” Mom shouted from the kitchen. I know why is she asking the vital question. She’ll take the case to the evening ‘ladies gossip court’. Mom hate cricket. No not because she don’t understand it. There are mainly two reasons. First the home comes to a standstill when there is an international match shown on the TV. I lay on the carpet -like a python after swallowed a deer- and watch TV the whole day. Tea for me arrives at the carpet at regular intervals from the kitchen. I do not attend to any of her emotional needs. Like help her to open that over tight oil jar. Or help her to fiddle with our washing machine. It’s a ‘washi-talke’. I think it do more talking than washing! The second is a more serious reason. On the cricket day, I’ll never allow her to switch the TV channel to see her favorite sop serial. I hate these never ending emotional melodrama. Nothing happens to the stories for weeks. The female actress cry (worst mourn) for one hour continuously, as if there is a grief competition going on among themselves! Our women folk watch this patiently as if they are giving moral support to the characters. My argument is that mom will not lose the direction of the story (except a number of mourning sessions) even if she hasn’t watched it for 3 months. So she is against cricket. The boys know the female folk psychology better than me. They never come to a home holding the bat. They know it’ll add fuel to fire. They leave it the ground and come as if they will never play the game ever in life. Mom gave the ball to me. Nicely polished with cooking oil. The boy collected the ball from me and ran back to the park. Seconds later I could hear the cheer from his friends. The game is started again after a ‘break’ I think these boys are learning life than cricket!! ![]()
