Street Games of india

Hi!

While travelling in India, particularly in smaller towns and villages, some of you would have seen children playing games on the streets in India....other than Cricket!

I am sure you would have wondered on things like What the game is called? What is the objective? etc...some of you would have taken photos of the kids enjoying themselves. I have taken some, will search out and post. If anyone else has any, I think it is worth sharing as also is the information on this subject.

Here is link which throws some light on street games of India:

http://www.4to40.com/discoverindia/s...eetgames_index

The site is also good for the other information in gives...

Some of the games have been explained in very few words by "Mulk Raj Anand" a noted writer from Punjab

Some of the games like "Ikri-Dukri" it has many names, "Kokla Chappaki" and "Oonch Neetch Ka Papra" are very peculier to Indian sub-continent....while others are played elsewhere as well.

Also would have seen the older folks playing card games in trains and street corners in smaller towns and villages? Any information is most welcome.

I think others would also what to know more about the subject, the opinions please?

Ashish

Gili -danda?

Nice link ashish0608.

Slightly off topic, but what are the rulesof
"gili-danda", refered to in several Indian movies? Is it identical to Cricket?

Street Games !

A very interesting link, Ashish, one which revives my childhood memories of Mumbai. We used to play most of the games listed there!

Two favourites of my childhood were "dabba ice-pice", an improvised version of hide-n-seek using an empty tin which had to be kicked; and "lagori", where two teams faced each other with a vertical pile of twelve small, flat stones between them. One team had to throw a tennis ball to knock down the pile of stones and then rebuild it with the other team trying to stop it!

Ahhh..., those were the days !

lagori as Shimla put it was my favourite. I would like to add on that "the other team tries to stop it" by throwing the tennis ball to the body of the member of the other team. Some of those throws are blooody painfull !!

We called it seven tiles !

And surprise surprise, I found out that we cannot claim this to be an GIO (Game of Indian Origin) as they play it in China also. Maybe one of those buddhist monk/travellers passed it across the borders! But in which direction? some historian has to answer !

I like the one where they hit the small shaped piece of woord with a longer stick to bounce it off the concrete, and then hit it with the stick while it's in the air. Then the fielders have to either try and catch it on the full or throw it back hitting the big stick which has been placed on the ground (similar to a game called Bat Down I remember playing at primary school). What's this game called? If I ever get my hard drive back I'll try posting a mpeg file of some kids playing it in Mandu. The ghats in varanasi are a great place to watch this game, too.

Maree its called - Kuttiyum Ko-llum in Kerala. Meaning, baby and the stick. The small stick is baby and the long stick is the stick

The name's "Gilli Danda". Gilli is the small piece of wood tapering at either end while Danda is the big stick.

I remember children running around yelling what I thought sounded like "Cupa tea" over and over. Never watched long enough to figure out the rules. This was near Mirzapur.

Thanks, Sudheer and Shimla.

Mala... no, it's just a variation on the spelling of Marie and it's what I was christened.
