Special request regarding Carom
Hi,
On my last day in India in April, I posted home a carom board, which miraculously made it to Ireland in one piece. I recently ran out of the special 'Disco Powder', and have searched high and low throughout Ireland for some more, to no avail. It seems the only way I can get it on the internet is if I buy a full set, which I don't want to do. So here's my request - would any IMers out there be able to post me some disco powder, I would appreciate it very much, and refund you through the mail....I think there are a couple of people here who can vouch for my good character ![]() If you can, please PM me Thanks!!! Conor. |

Hi Conor,
have you tried Toys R Us? I remember a few years ago I had the same problem, only in Germany. I ended up finding the powder at Toys R Us then, but I wouldn't know if they still have it. It was sold in small bottles and not very expensive as far as I remember. I just thought you could try them. Good luck. ![]() |

use boric powder. thats whats bought here in india, often. otherwise ordinary talcum powder will do. |

Not that I can help in the purchase of this, but both boric and talcum powder dull the colours on the board over time. If i'm correct to assume what Conner is requesting is a powder that looks like tiny little balls.
Once you use these to play carom you just would not go back to regular powder, as the dics slide like a skater on ice. I know it is available in Delhi, I bought mine at a games shop in Paharganj I think. Thats as far as I can help you. Umbreen

But boric powder and talcum powder are used quite commonly as well. hmm.. why is it called disco powder? |

Look for Crokinole Anti-Friction powder? Crokinole is a game somewhat similar to Carom. At least it is played on a wooden board.

Thanks guys for your help.
I've tried talcum powder, icing sugar, caster sugar, grinded salt, pepper, salt 'n' pepper.....but like Beena said, none of them are a patch on this 'Dsico Powder' stuff I got in Delhi. So thanks for the links, hopefully I'll be back playing carom before long. Incidentally, ain't this some game??? I got addicted to it in Lahore, spent a good two weeks playing non-stop, after that, I knew I had to bring it home. Now I've got all my mates into it, they're loving it, we've kind of 'Irishised' the rules, including a flick on the head for the loser from everyone else. Great game! Anyone know the origin? Thanks again! |

It is a very addictive game.
Gives you a real high if you can get some of those sharp cuts and complicated rebound strokes right. Requires really steady fingers and some imagination to target the right disc ( without giving any sort of advantages to the opponent ) - like allowing the striker to gently push one of your pieces in front of the opponents piece and then going on to pocket your main target. The trick is in predicting and planning what the striker can do AFTER it finishes the main job i.e. pocket the target disc ( i.e. block an opponents piece, fish out a difficult piece in line for your next hit etc). It makes the game all that more creative and challenging. I have seen experts achieving 3-4 tasks with one hit. |

I bought 2 boards back from Lahore as well... My dad use to be very good at this game, I remember watching him and his friends play it when I was a kid... the skill those guys had was unbelievable, almost like watching poetry in motion.
Unfortunately, I have the approach of slamming the striker as hard as I can and see what goes in As far as history goes, no idea but I did manage to find this. http://www.carrom.org/game/?subcat=10 |
