Sania Mirza

EXTRA! Announcing the arrival onto the world sport scene of Indian tennis player Sania Mirza. As I type, she is battling for a spot in the semifinals of the Dubai tennis tournament.

She is 18, was born in Mumbai and now lives in Hyderabad. This year she seems to have lost her baby fat, picked up a nose stud, and won the Hyderabad Open last month. Now playing in Dubai, a major tournament with all the good players, she has already beaten Croatian Jelena Kostanic, world's number 36, and Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, world's number 5.

Go Sania!

Thumbs up

It's not the Indian Cricket team fighting Pakistan. Their biggest competition is now Sania. Looks like whatever she is doing is a big news with a lot of fanfare and all....

It is time that India talked more about Sanias and Anands (Top 3 or 2 in the chess world for years!). But unfortunately, tiny Spain is probably more passionate about Anand than most of the India, besides a few spots in T-Nadu and the Metros. So what is new!? <sighs>

I hope the newly launched hockey league picks up and gets a fan following.

So I jinxed her...

...and she lost to Jelena Jankovic and is out of the tournament.

Her ranking will improve from her performance in this tournament, though, and maybe she'll start being a contender in future tournaments. The photo above in beach's post is from when she won the Wimbledon junior doubles in 2003.

Sania is another of those cases oveblown by the media; more for her looks than for her game !! Much style, little substance !!

Why this cynicism Shimla? She's one of the top 100 women players of the world, won the junior women's doubles' wimbledon title when she was 16, gave a tough fight to Serena in Australia Open recently and she just beat world #5 who's the defending US Open champion.

She's now on her way to be in world's top 50...I don't remember Leander or Mahesh ever doing so well in Singles. Sania is probably the best thing to happen to Indian tennis in a long time. So, is it her fault if she's good looking too?

What would you call substance?

But Radz, the same media hype might be helping her by pulling more sponsors towards her.. Money and attention is good for any sports
And Shimla, give her some time..before outright rejecting her... I think at this time.. all of us should be appreciating and encouraging her.

Thumbs up She will be back

Absolutely right tornado. Just observe her fighting spirit, in most of the games she made a great ‘come back’ and ruled. Hope she will do it once again.

After a loooong time an Indian sports personality is in limelight in individual game.

So, !!!!

Chess..

Ok, did not want to start a new thread-as I assume this thread is broad enough to cover the condition of sports/games in general.

Kasparov retired yesterday after winning the Linares. So Anand is now by default, the highest rated active player in the Chess World. Would have been better if GK was overtaken by Anand while the former was still active. But can't complain.
