Rugby in India?
Howdy i was just wondering if anyone knew about the sport of Rugby in India. I am from the states and play for my schools club sport team but was wondering if i could find anywhere in India to play. I'll be there for 5 months in Pondicherry, Cochin, Porto Novo, Gulf of Mannar. I do know someone who played there last year, he came from the states much like myself and ended up on a team that won 7th in the nation. I'd very much like to come back from India w/ a story like that myself.

Hi,
There is a rugby club in Kolkatta, but that probabaly isn't much help to you. We didn't see much evidence of rugby being played, but if you hang around with expats, you may find something, even if it's just a "touch rugby" team. Good luck, I love the sport too.

Please tell me that this most gentleman of sports is played in India. Im sure that the aussies will point us in the general direction of a good game. 7's in my case as im a little too old to be playing 15's. However if there was a geriatric grade for 15's i would certainly be in.

You should of seen my search for a rugby football all over Delhi. Walking into almost every sports store in Connaught Place. I finally found one in a store in the outer circle of CP. I remember kicking the ball around in Jaipur with friends, with curious looks from the locals. In Bombay, walking around will a strange shaped ball in my hands got more looks, but less curious. I bet ya they were thinking "Oh, I've seen that being used in some show on Star Sports". In Goa, I saw a lot of rugby balls on the beach being thrown around. I presume that they were all English tourists. Other than that, in my latest trip, I found no rugby clubs at all, not that I was looking, but it wouldn't of been bad to watch a local team training.

I wouldn't mind buying an Indian rugby jersey. Something quite unique in this part of the world.
