Indian Football
There might already be athread on this, but I couldn't find it.
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about football, soccer for our American friends, in India. Have any of you gone to a local game? Any links about the teams, famous players, league tables etc. would be much appreciated, as it's always useful to be able to speak the one true international language. Thank You!

Indian Football
Soccer used be the thing in India. Cricket has killed every other sports there. It's picking up again, now that we realize we suck at cricket. It's more popular in Goa, West Bengal, and Kerala.
Something funny my dad told me about how soccer was played in his days (when he was in his teens). The winning team was decided by who could bring in more bullies and forcefully pick up the cup. It was then the responsibility of the winning team to protect the referee from the team that lost. This was like an understood thing. Doesn't happen like this now ![]() |

Well, to be honest, I did feel a bit stupid posting this thread, as I was sure it must have been covered before, just couldn't find where. Thanks! |

I just returned from my son's school where Tashi Tenzing, grandson of Tenzing Norgay was talking about his mountaineering and other adventures. Most inspiring for a bunch of 6-11 year old boys! Anyway, Tashi's next adventure is to walk with a football from the southern tip of India to the foot of Mount Everest, then scale the mountain. This is a humanitarian project in connection with the Soccer World Cup 2006, and you can read more about how it aims to help Indian (and other) children, at this site

I don't think it's stupid at all ( I'm sure that's not what VV meant either), as I've been wondering the same thing. Soccer is such a popular sport worldwide, why did India get drawn to cricket? I'd much rather watch a soccer game any day. Let's have a poll: Would you rather watch (or play) cricket or soccer? |

Cricket is an epic battle of skill and brains. It is totally unique. I know this is going to sound racist but ... what the hell - the average American does not understand cricket. It is a cultural experience which gets under your skin. Sorry Skell!!

That's not racist, it's absolutely true. We have no clue about cricket, and anyone who says otherwise must be a more recently imported American; probably from the UK or India.
Perhaps someone can explain it to us. |

Well, I am an Indian living in the Boston area for 10 years now. The Red Sox (Boston's baseball team) just won the World Series (World Series?!
) and it...didn't do anything for me. Although I am very happy for my co-workers though But having used to Friday afternoon lunches with my coworkers, when all they do is discuss Baseball (yes, I often feel a little left out ), I am beginning to get a grasp of the whole concept. How much you are drawn to something like a major league game is definitely a cultural thing. But I have now made it a point to attend the occasional baseball or football game just for the heck of having a good time with friends ![]()
