Hockey anyone?
Anybody got any ideas where / how I might manage to get involved in a game of hockey while in India?
I have kept my eyes open on recent trips but failed to track down a game. Thought I might have had a chance on the Maidan in Kolkata, but no luck. Maybe the season's really short or something. I know it's no longer as popular a game as it was, but I still hope. With luck, we'll be back this autumn, so if I can fix something in advance ... ![]() |

Love to but the only rink I saw was in Shimla. Ohhhh Ohhhh your talking field hockey.
It looks like a great game though .... I've only seen it played by girls at the private schools in Canada - shame. ![]()

I thought "Shall I put field hockey" and then "Nah, surely no ice rinks in India".
You should try to catch a good mens hockey game; fast, competitive and great skills. There's some sort of super league that includes among others the Bangalore Lions, I remember. And yes, I've heard about watching girls hockey before! ![]() |

The super league is going on right now.The best place to head would be Punjab.(Chandigarh)as hockey thrives in that state.

Hockey is the national sport of India, but cricket is the "de facto" national sport. I think hockey is ranked #3 in India behind cricket and soccer.

Hi
If your looking to join a Hockey match in India then the only place I suggest is in Calcutta. Go along and meet up with the very friendly Anglo Indian community at Bow Barracks nr. Bow Bazaar Police Station. Take a metro to Chandni Chowk stn. its just around the block. Ask for the Barracks, its just two red buildings where the Anglo's live. Chances are you will see them practicing in the street! They are all involved with Hockey which is played in the Maidan. ( Rangers Club) Just go and make enquiries. You can ask for a guy named Chris who is an International player and lives in the Barracks. Mention my name if you like..Haemish from the UK. I'm sure they will invite you to a practice match. Jolly Hockeysticks!
