I will be traveling for work throughout India and wonder if there are gym chains that you can go to? How much is it? Grateful for any advice for this fitness buff

Hi Sarah,
I am in a somewhat similar situation but I am based in Delhi without moving too much around the country. There are no big name gym chains at least I have not found one and there are local, Indian ones, which are expensive (as an example I was quoted EUR 600 per annum subsciption plus joining fee). These are only available in big cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. In addition, I am not sure whether they would allow you to pay on a per visit basis, or will require to buy the full year membership. However, all top of the range international hotels have gyms. You may be able to get a gym in your hotel or visit another hotel on some arrangement. If you would like to know more about fitness culture in India pls PM me, I am a fitness freak and even work in a related field. rgds Volga |

I use Golds in Mumbai but it is really crappy when compared to any ym in the US or even Hong Kong. Its ok as long as you can handle all the short pathetic, fat Indians who work out here.

salwar kameez
Sarah,
you ain't seen nothin' yet! this evening I had a lady in my ladies-only gym section who was wearing a long (to her ankles) salwar kameez top with matching trousers and smart leather shoes which she took off before climing the treadmill (so she was running barefoot). that kameez gave her trouble when she switched to the bike ![]() |

gym in mumbai
there is a nice gym called Inch by Inch, on Marine Drive, just before you get to the overpass by the cricket fields. Also GOlds Gym in a good bet, but all the way out at Malabar, depends where you are staying.
The gym I went to in Delhi had a buffet in the treadmill room! |

Super, thanks! I have chilled a bit on the topic after getting here. Brought these lovely rubber bands which you can do excerices with. However, my plan to utilize India as a diet opportunity seems to have failed as I eat non-stop (indian food being my weakness) and seem to have a stomach of steel
![]() Oh well, perhaps Africa will have to be my next detstination for an unconventional diet ![]() Cheers, Sarah |

The bands are pretty good however dieting in India is impossible. I tried to maintain a strict diet when I got to Mumbai but that lasted a week.
Enjoy your stay ! Bill |

Kulfi, Kulfi Faloodas, Bhel Puri, Wada Pau's, Kaju Barfee, Rasgullas, Gulab Jamuns and Booze. These are the reasons I need to work out 6 days a week in Mumbai. I need to move out of the Colaba area soon probably to the new Grand Hyatt in the suburbs. Hopefully they have less places to eat in the area. Bill |

I was afraid I had gained a lot of weight in India because I didn't do any regular exercise--just walked a lot and climbed lots of stairs (but I do that on a regular basis anyway). I ate like a pig...and wore salvar kameez so was really afraid to come home and put on my regular clothes. Thank goodness....no weight gain at all!! Back to the gym this week...feel like I lost muscle tone. I had intended to do situps etc. on my own...but never got around to doing it in India. |
