may i be allowed to share my views here ?
1. sports, just like education, has become expensive. if one has to excel at the international level in whatever field, one has to spend money. period. remember how p.t.usha used to think towards the fag end of thr career - had she been allowed to have training abroad, she would have excelled much better. 2. when your son excels at the international level, you'll always be over-joyed and tend to share some incidents from his childhood. i do feel that at that point of time, the father was worried for the maid and definitely happy that she was not hit. but it also occurred to him that why not put him to serious sports ? now after so many years, the initial worry is not there but the feeling that he had taken the right decision at that time gets highlighted. |

1. Compared to the USA, I've notice there isn't a hammer and tongs no-holds barred political, judicial and legislative fight between equally armed gun-control and gun-ownership advocates in India - that has to have an impact on the media's own knowledge of firearms, use and abuse, and thus in the reporting of guns. 2. The political organised violence has bursts of activity in India and so, private gun ownership and state gun control takes on a much more serious face. Its not just people killing and injuring each other in gangster criminal violence or domestic intra-family disputes. Here, people are taking on the state with firearms. That gives a different and more serious complexion to gun ownership, as far as the heavy hand of the state is concerned. 3. Having said that, in 2005 I saw a gun shop just down the street that I grew up on in Pune, Maharastra - called themselves armorers and the bill-board listed the rifles they had for sale ! This fall I'll go in there, chat a bit and get a better picture on these things. 4. Geez - I hope this doesn't become an USA type of gun-control/ownership fight thread. After abortion, but ahead of gay rights, immigration, racism, this is one of the most contentious subjects in USA online forums, IMO, and been like that for 3 decades and every argument has been rehearsed, rehashed millions of times. Disclaimer: not a NRA member but definitely support the 2nd Amendment and my right to own a firearm for self-defense. -skk |

going off topic...
a whole new thread is needed!
There may be an online page of Abhinav Bindra's TV interviews - long, tedious interviewers and A B looking absolutely bored . I would be too, with the same questions being thrown at him by the similar Indian English media TV crews in Beijing... Greta points there skk

It is indeed, Velu. And since i have been extremely busy in the last couple of days, and not looked recently at the news, have there been any more gold medals? And is there a likely prospect for another?

well, the story seems to be getting better by the hour.
His sister is married into Kapoor family of Delhi, the makers of Atlas brand of cycles. And another big one, he belongs to 5th generation for Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa. Now for those who are not aware who Sardar Hari Singh was, he as the Commander-In-Chief, led the army of Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Some British historians have regarded Nalwa as the greatest warrior of all time because he was a statesman combatant. He won Multan, Kashmir and Peshawar for Ranjit Singh. His victory brought him international fame and, in the local folklore, drew comparison with Napoleon. Ranjit Singh awarded him Gujranwala for his stupendous services. Some historians have estimated that, 'had he lived longer and had the resources and artillery of the British, he would have conquered most of Asia and Europe'. |

For those of you backing Indian Medal hopes watch Akhil in action in his Quaterfinals Boxing match. Scheduled to be relayed live at 5pm India Standard Time(without exaggeration) today!
If he wins this then Bronze is assured for India as both loosing semifinalists get bronze due to boxing being a contact sport. (already started) |

a rumour has it - that after abhinav bindra won the gold medal
"... so excited were members of the Indian Olympic Association, so taken in this moment of high-fives and champagne-popping, that some of them checked the official medal table to see if India had moved past America" :brishti |

Yes, it is sad that Akhil lost but I consider their performance quite uplifting, one has to see Bhiwani (from where these three lads are) to believe it (or at least hear about it)I know someone from Bhiwani. And I wish someone would invest at least half the money they offered to Bindra to the academy from where these three lads are. |

Sports competition & practice teaches you so much about life, the setting of goals, instills confidence, & and often developes & prepares one's body for the middle years & beyond. What could be better at the expense of a little fun, fresh air & exerecise.
Some over talented, dedicated lucky schmucks actually go on to win gold medals at the olynpics games.![]()
