No Blue Max - I don't think 'wishful'. If the infrastructure for Commonwealth Games goes well, it could be a good possibility.

There was an article out in the Times of India today which detailed the work taking place in certain stadiums for the commonwealth games... in some cases the work is on track but in some its not..
The links is here |

Same worries were shared on Beijing being able to host games!I think the rights for holding games already been bought by Countries in the future and whatever can happen may happen only after 12 years.
India is well aware of the after benefits of holding important games and will leave no stone unturned in infrastructure investments. After Asiad in 1983 I think those questions or doubts disappeared. |

Hey, you live in Delhi..
thousands of homes have been demolished. Since this is offtopic, posting two links is all- warning, I have not read the complete articles. No need to. Both the articles are a year and two old; friends working in Delhi tell me it is worse now. I remember reading an article in an Indian magazine recently.. the figures of people made homeless were alarming. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5325034.stm http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/01/01/news/delhi.php |

Yes , demolition of slums along the Yamuna has taken place to clean up the city for the Commonwealth Games..... the thing is that even if it was not for the CW games , it would still have been required if the drive to clean the Yamuna even became that urgent and serious..
I dont agree with the rehabilitation process , but moving them might be right otherwise..? |

Clean up? They are building high end buildings in its catchment area. I will bet there is severe flooding in Delhi within five years of construction, aka Mumbai for similar reasons
The games have been an excuse to remove the poor from their homes so rich builders and corrupt officials can benefit. Normal in todays times, when we subsidise the rich worldwide and make the poor pay when they screw up, like the sub prime crisis. Same principle here. The success of the scam can be guaged by the fact that Delhiites don't know that a couple of hundred thousand have been displaced from their homes 'in preparation for the games'. Close family in Delhi thought I was lying, so last trip, I took them there. Told you this was offtopic ![]() |

Captain, I bet you are also aware of the house, shops that have been sealed and demolished otherwise. Which were owned by middle class and upper middle class of the society.
End of the day, someone has to do something somehow, if they demolish then some people will cringe and if they do not then another set will cringe. I agree that relocation should be offered, but to how many. I guess if I have just moved to Delhi, I will setup a shack anywhere I want, because I am aware that if the govt. breaks it then they will allot a proper home to me. |

In a city like Delhi, every cleanup drive, leaves many homeless, work less or poorer by a considerable amount. And all those drives have been unpopular among the masses, maybe the CNG coversion, or metro land acquisition, road blockades of construction, moving out of industry, demolition of illegal structures, sealing drive etc etc. |

I thought the demolitions of shops or sealing had stopped? How many private homes of the rich are illegal, or occupy illegal public land around their house? Hell, the entire sainik farms area is illegal. Demolish those? These people have their backs to the wall already. Clean up? Clean up the corruption first, then all othe cleanups will be fair. |

Lets wait for cleaning of corruption and let all things be hanging around all this while. If we cannot do anything about corruption, lets not do anything about other things as well.
Tell me one thing here, why do we have portray rich or privileged people as demons to portray poor and downtrodden as the ones needing help ? |

That sentiment, that cleaning up corruption can wait, is precisely what the babus and politicians are counting on.
Nothing wrong with being rich at all. But to demolish poor homes for the same crime being committed by the middle class and rich in Defence Colony and Vasant Vihar and across Delhi- including former prime ministers and their cronies- smells like a toilet. We will clean corruption last. Meanwhile, we will demolish your homes to feed our corruption. What if I told you that? |
