Here is a very good article on Vijendra on the BBC (with a video that has footage of the Bhiwani coach Jagdish Kumar and the academy in Bhiwani) where I found that the lad has already done modeling for magazines.

And to give credit where it is due, I found the link to the BBC story on BBC (Bhiwani Boxing Club) via Sen's Blog.

He sure is a very handsome man, I realized it y'day in pre-match interviews only.

I pray to god that is dream of being the first professional wrestler from the country comes true, and he might reach MSG some day. Inshallah !!

If it happens, it will change the face of Indian sport forever, infact, I feel that these three medal have already helped to change the scenario a lot, one medal could have been a fluke, but now common man has started to sit up and take notice.

I hope these achievements will help build focus around the entire sports domain in India and more thought and money is going to go into the creation of resources which help optimize the talent which is available in the country..... it's high time that people realize that there are other things than just cricket...

And I guess the prize money given after the achievement might also spur some! I hope Saina Nehwal gets the support she deserves. And does anyone has a clue about Gopichand's Badminton Academy? I mean there is a website for Prakash Padukone's Badminton Academy but not for Gopichand.

And I guess IMers must have heard about this one? That when Saina Nehwal and Gopichand went to meet M.S. Gill, the sports minister, he asked Gopichand who are you?

I have blogged about this one and I am pasting it here-

It is in many newspapers, I read it in the Indian Express. Saina Nehwal and Pullela Gopichand go to meet M.S. Gill, the country's sports minister. Gill recognizes Saina (she lost in the quarter finals in the badminton singles event at Beijing). Then he turns to ask Gopichand (All England badminton Champion 2001 and the current National Badminton coach) - "Who are you?"

Quote:
While Gill greeted Saina heartily, he could not recognise Gopichand who was standing next to Saina and asked him who he was.

“Who are you?” Gill asked Gopichand, leaving him with no other option but to spell out his name.
Gopichand is only the second Indian after Prakash Padukone to win the All England Open Champion in 2001 ...
Now I was relating this incident to my colleagues in the office and one of then quipped, "Well, if someone would ask M.S. Gill do you know Padukone his reply would be of course he knows Deepika Padukone, she is the famous model and film star."

I wouldn't really be surprised if this happens!

And for many of us Prakash Padukone is always going to be the real star.

So Vijender has to settle for a bronze:
http://www.expressindia.com/latest-n...-India/352046/
Beijing, August 22: Indian boxer Vijender Kumar settled for a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics after being out-punched by Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux in the semifinals of the 75 kg category.
...

Still, excellent result, especially given HIS parents (and thus his own?) financial circumstances - from the wiki entry:
Vijender was born in Kaluwas village, 5 km from Bhiwani, Haryana. His father, Mahipal Singh, is a bus driver (who drove buses overtime to raise funds for Vijender's training [2]) and his mother is a homemaker

Anyone having an idea that when Vijendra and Sushil Kumar would come back to New Delhi? My nephew wants to go to the airport!

Oh! and I may make 'blink and you will miss it' kind of appearance at BBC World TV today at 6.15 pm India time in their show 'My Games.'

Olympics closing ceremony

Well, its over - and its off to London. I was very pleased to see the UK at 4th in the gold medal league - damn good going for a country with only 6x million people. Well done !

The closing ceremony handover to London was very good - using "Whole Lotta Love" with Jimmy Page ( "Led Zeppelin" )was inspired, IMO - as was the use of the double-decker London bus that changed into a stage. Only one thing jarred.. The bloody bus STOPPED at the bus stop ! Never happened in my day

Well done to all with empathies for the UK - which includes me.

Is that wishful thinking?
