Fishing in India

It surprises me that those using a web based forum, dont also use other resources on the web to get answers to their questions.

Technically you do need a licence to fish in freswaters in India, although in practice I doubt very much if you will be apporached by a government bailiff! More likely you will be attacked by a local for stealing his food source!

There are a number of fishing camps, owned and run by the government where you can fish for Mahseer, both in the south and the north. there are also privately run camps, that can charge high rates for fishing for Mahseer.

Many strecthes of Indias rivers are either polluted or have been fished out by locals, which means that options for fishing are dratsically reduced for freshwater, with only less desirable species available, except in highland rivers where good trout fishing can be found, (like so many places in the world).

Sea/Beach fishing in India will be a hit and miss affair dependant on local populations.....but once again they tend to use basic/netting methods, and since ocean going fish are transcient it will be possible to find good fishing spots off Indias shoreline.

Take a collection of lures, 20lB line hooks from 8 to 0/8, and discuss with locals popular baits, and you will catch anything from Mahseer to Catfish in the rivers, and from Shark to Pomfret in coastal waters.

There is no liecence required to fish in india
Wrong, there are places where you MUST have a licence. Mostly all mountain rivers of the Himaalaya are beeing well kept by the government/state. At least in Himachal Pradesh. Huge fisheries makes sure there allways are fish in the waters.. and for this they claim a fee!

If you want to know more about fishing in HP, check out the fisheries dept. site: http://himachal.nic.in/fisheries/fee.htm

I have been in india twice, but it never struck me to bring my rod along. But when i am leaving for India in less than a month, i will be shure to bring my new telescoperod, some hooks and lures. I have checked around a bit and most people and sites claim that almost any lake, river or pond have fishingpossibilities. Great I love fishing!

The Indiamike expertise is so good there is a tendency to use it as first resort ---and apart from some of the really-obvious-ones like basic visa questions, that is OK with the community here. Somehow it still manages to remain focussed on India and the Mods keep it that way.

I suspect that any beach that is worth fishing from will be fished commercially by fisherman who are having a hard time catching lunch, let alone making a living, so although they may see a fishing tourist as a curiosity, best not to be a sucessful curiosity!

a friend had reasonable success beachfishing at Arambol (nightime) - most mornings he had 2 or three large table fish - a type of red snapper and even barrumundi (which I thought only existed in northern Australia!)

Hi there, whilst holidaying in Kashmir(1980's) I
Did some Trout fishing in the Palgalhm Region.

I had to get a Licence in Srinagar which Only allowed a certain Bag Limit,Which at that time was
6 (maximum).we also had to pay a Landowner a small
Fee for entering his land to get to the river.
It was a most enjoyable experience as there was snow everywhere.Out of the six trout we caught,we gave 2 to the landowner, had the rest for dinner that night on the houseboat.
