Fishing in India
I'll be in India for 5 months starting at the end of this month. I'm planning on bringing some fishing equipment with me when i leave. Does anyone know anything about fishing in Southern India for saltwater or freshwater? What should i bring and what species will i encounter? Also do i need special permits to be able to fish, something like a fishing license here in the USA?

I've never seen anyone surf fishing in India. The waters are heavily overharvested, and you'll see plenty of net trawlers and "country boats" (rough outriggers) fishing with nets as well. In Kerala, they use the Chinese nets with the wooden framework and counter weights. I've never heard of India as a fishing destination, but who knows?

I've heard a lot a bout the Masheer. It kinda looks like an oversized carp and some say it is the hardest fighting freshwater fish in the world. It inhabits rivers in Southern India and have done research on them. I think the only way i could fish for them would be to book a guided trip, i've found a lot of British outfitters but no American. My Professor who i will be going with has seen locals catching them (not with fishing rod) by just walking into the rivers w/ clubs and bashing them.

I have been led to beleave that the "Masheer ? "also inhabits fast rivers in the Himalayers .I raised this subject up with a local in Nagger ,in the Kullu valley ,but all i could get out of him was they were somewhere down river. All he was interested in was taking me fishing for trout .. I have also seen a web page on a holiday resort in southern india whitch advertised fishing for the "Masheer" Keep posting!

I guess i'll just have to find out. It will prob be like traveling to the florida keys and not hiring any guides and i do pretty good when i do that. But mostly for non-game fish.

It's funny you mention fishing in India. I've never heard of a person fishing as a hobby there, unlike America. I doubt you need any kind of license, but just ask a local around the fishing area to make sure. Damn, now I want to go fishing!

There's the Eco Camp at Potasali, run by the Assam Anglers' Association with luxury tents, set in a clearing about a mile from the river. We didn't do any fishing though, just walking and birdwatching in Nameri NP across the river and around campsite and surrounding countyside. Most impressive bird was a Spot-Bellied Eagle Owl which perched in one of the trees at the campsite.

hi,
Fishing in India is lot of fun. We always carry our fishing gear, when ever we travel to inida. In most any place you will find a river, a canal or a lake to fish. There is no liecence required to fish in india. But some big lakes and Reserviors (dams), the fishing rights are auctioned. In any case you can always pay a small tip they will be happy to let u fish. Its mostly catfish and black fish that can stay alive outside the water for very long. for bait, its mostly worms. good luck dan |

Ya it looks like i'll prob be bringing my 9 weight fly rod and matching reel along w/ a 4 piece spinning rod. That should prob cover everything i want to be able to do. I prob wouldnt even bring anything if i could just buy a fishing pole over there but i talked to my buddy who went to the same places i'm going last year and he said he never saw one fishing rod, only nets being used. It will be an interesting adventure.
