Doing Sports in India
Hi!
I'm a sports addict... I will move to india in two weeks, I will work at a school in Dehra Dun and live in a small rural town outside the city. I'm wondering, what kind of sports are possible to do? Do indians exercise at all? If yes, what? How would they react if I would go jogging from time to time? If that would be ok or at least accepted, what do I have to wear? Swimming isn't possible, isn't it? Thank you for the information... I looked for it, but I haven't read much about that topic. Lagom

Hey Lagom, yes plenty of sports may be played in India. For example the sprint out the back of your hotel to avoid that annoying rickshaw driver; the shot put your pack on to the bus roof while fighting off the other bus driver who wants you to go with his bus; the long distance follow those directions to a museum that will be closed/under repair/unaccountably missing; the crossing the road obstacle course...the list goes on. and btw almost anything you do will be weird anyway, so don't worry!

Gyms there too... Dehradun has some very reputed schools. Don't know which one you are going to teach in but if it's a good one, facilities for swimming, gym and all should be there within school premises. Last edited by KABAARY : Sep 22nd, 2008 at 01:44. Reason: Typos & all that... |

Haha. Laughing at how much haydn and KABAARY are taking the piss. Well, lagom, the most popular sport in most parts of India is cricket. There is no way of avoiding it in India. Being from Switzerland, I'm pretty sure you don't know to play it. Learn the rules and play with the locals and I'm sure you'll be popular.
The national sport of India is hockey, even though it isn't the most popular sport. I've never seen a game played in India on the streets, parks or anywhere, but I'm positive they do happen. Soccer is another big sport in India, as well as native games kabbadi. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_of_India This site should explain it to you all. |

I was also interested in sports possibilities in that area -- is anyone able to tell me anything about Rishikesh? Besides yoga, would I be able to find a swimming pool there (suited for sports not spa-ing), how about gym, etc...?
