Aussies V Indians - Reaction On Indian Streets

Watching the news over here, it has just dominated everything in the media, this issue of poor sportsmanship and such. Everytime I go to India, people on the street want to talk to me about cricket, and they always say how they like the Aussie team. I wonder if any of this has changed already, and what's the word on the street up there. Any comments welcome. For people who don't know what I'm talking about : http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2008/...554571878.html

sticks & stones ....

These he said/she said - alleged racial slurs popup in North American sports from time to time .... but rarely is there any proof and/or recorded footage of the incidents and thus no disciplinary action ever taken.

Dunno about the streets, but lot of hype on TV.

Actually, there have been some street protests in some Indian cities. Suspect Aussie cricketers are not so popular right now.
Or some umpires.

There was a lot of cultural misunderstanding.

Similar examples are guys in south india holding hands which to some tourist are seen as a gay gesture. Though the guys who were holding hands usually have no idea about it.

Form this misunderstanding it has snow balled into a never ending saga....

Guess this is due to the game been given nation colours. Where a whole nation is hurt.

and in which other country are they popular? other then aus?
this could be the "king of the hill" effect? but i actually find them very boorish.
i think every team has few such idiots (harbhajan is one of them). aussie team has far too many of them

Hmmm....just bad losers in my opinion.

....and yes, a cultural clash too. Just 1 innocent Indian yet offensive Australian word leading to effigy burning??!

Get over it.

In a role reversal a typical Australian reaction would be along the lines of......"meh" and drowning the sorrows with beer and a barbecue.

I think it's a little more than a mere "cultural misunderstanding". There's a definite history here of Symonds being singled out for these "monkey" insults (see the picture in this previous BBC news report).

If it were just an innocent Indian word being misunderstood then I'd expect the word to be heard more frequently - and hurled at other players than the only non-white player on the team.

I think it's a little sad that an entire nation appears to be in denial that maybe - just maybe - one of its population might have made a mildly racist comment in the heat of the moment.

Please refer to my comments in other thread. Its not a denial on the accusations, however its a protest against the way the charges have been fixed. Secondly the statement comes from Sachin Tendulkar himself, not many in cricket community would have audacity to question his integrity, unlike fellow Australian players...

Micky i was not referring to the words said by Harbajan but his actions before that.

Quote:
Symonds said Harbhajan's bewildering decision to pat Australian fast bowler Brett Lee on the bottom during play on Friday sparked the furore.

When Symonds asked Harbhajan why he had done this, the fiery Indian – then batting – allegedly called the Queenslander a "monkey".

Whoa! Rule no 1 when coming to Australia....

DO NOT PAT "BLOKES" ON THE ARSE!

unless you are 1. of the opposite sex
2. playing AFL football and your teammate just
scored a goal.

Oh the embarrassment of the poor man. And in front of so many people.....

BTW: Men hold hands all over India. Not just south.

I think the word in itself is not racist but derogatory like bastard said by Brad Hogg. However, it can be used in a racist way if said in certain way to only certain community of ppl. It is entirely a subjective thing. How do u know how Bhajji said it if at all. I dont think most of the ppl in India know the difference between Synmonds and other team members. I dont think they know what aboriginal is. Indians didnt make fun of him bcoz of his race but rather his behavior, his personality, and the fact that he is a good player who has cost India game many times.

Another reason why Indians are not happy is that Australians developed this whole thing of playing it hard and gamesupmanship and 'what happens in the field stays in the field' thing. They have always involved in what they call "mental disintegration" and frankly ugly cricket. Indians believe Aussies have done much worse things on the field and said many things and they have got away with many things much worse while Indians who started it now to give it back to aussie are being punished.

I also think Indian players and BCCI should not make comments in the heat of the moment and sleep on it for a day in the future before commenting.
