Shimla, I will try to bail you out of this...

One day is more common these days, but Test matches are how the game used to be before one day matches were invented.. !!
Yes it is possible for a team to just play out the whole time, in test matches..!!
Basically, this rule helps the underdogs. It means that you need to get the whole opposition team out, 2 times, to win.. as simple as that. If you dont have resources to win.. you can still come out with a draw, by not getting out
Still more questions.. I think Shimla will take some time out to answer them !!

This can happen on two counts:

1. The wicket does not offer any assistance to bowlers, as a result of which batsmen of both sides keep piling runs and the game ends without a result. In hindsight a fruitless exercise and a sheer waste of time for anybody watching.

2. A keenly fought contest with the team batting fourth holding out for a draw and preventing defeat. In this case we have on full display the skills of players on both sides and the result is a fantastic game even without a result. Cricket is the winner on such occasions.

Hope you have followed my explanation!

Thanks, phantom !

Let me elaborate - In Test cricket there is no rule which prevents one side batting for the entire five days. However, in practice this does not happen, as it becomes a ridiculous exercise and kills spectator interest. If a batting team feels it has enough runs on the board and all its wickets are not lost, it "declares" - voluntarily closes its innings and invites the second team to have a go.

Shimla, you've forgotten the final reason why it can be a drawn....

It chucks it down for five days!
(We're used to that in England).

Cheers mate!
I might stick Eric on the avatar later...
I'm a little engaged in the test match at the moment.

The deal with the cricket is that it is the biggest sporting event in England for a very, very long time!

Cheers

Rob

The fat leg spinner's making the most of his last appearance in tests on English soil. All the best to him!

England must be missing Thorpe very badly now !

All very tightly balanced at the moment!
Wonderful cricket from both teams.
Was it me or was Warnie 'feeling' his shoulder in the later part of the session?
