Hi Shimshai,
I was at Sriramgam temple in Dec 2002. Is probably the biggest temple town in India and one of the most impressive. Is the main reason for visiting Trichy.
As almost everywhere in TN, there are very few foreigners, altough quite a lot of indian pilgrims.
If you are preparing a trip to TN, Sriramgam is a must.

It's massive, that is for certain. The surrounding area is interesting, too. There is an almost equally massive Shiva temple nearby at Jambonakonam, and an impressive Rock Temple built atop a large outcrop. A popular pilgrim trip is to visit both Sri Ranganathaswamy temples - the one in Sri Rangam in TN and the other in Srirangapatnam in KN. Both are situated on islands in the Kaveri River, which is appropriate since Ranganathaswamy is Visnu sleeping in the folds of Ananta upon the waters of eternity, dreaming the universe.
I brake for Maddur vadas.
More info on Sri Rangam
Yes Sri Rangam is definitely one of the most awesome temples in all of South India. The place is massive and has many shrines and murtis within the temple walls. I was there two times last year and the people were all very friendly and nice. The rice they serve at the temple shop is very good! yummm..lemmon rice & curd rice! If you aren't a Hindu you won't be allowed into see Rangaji though. You can view most of the temple but not the inner sanctum. If you are a Hindu then, December isn't a great month to go there because it's absolutely packed with pilgrims (many Ayapa followers in black make holy trips through out S. India). I would definitely suggest going to the paying queue where it cuts the time by around 90-95%.
One of my favourite spots in Sri Rangam is the Narasimha Perumal temple located about 2km from the main temple. They have a giant murti of Narasimha (half man half lion god) and it tends to not be quite as crowded as the main temple.
I miss Sri Rangam ...
