I'm currently studying Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) by correspondence course, but I would really like to take actual classes with a teacher (I feel like I learn better that way).
I would love to study in India, and was wondering if anyone has any tips for how to go about this.

I heard that there are universities that have Jyotish degrees. Does anyone know anything about this? I guess I could also just find a teacher or other classes to take as well. I want to look at all my options (though I do have the limitation of only being proficient in English)

Whatever I do, I want to make sure it's legit and that I'll be learning good information. I'm serious about learning Jyotish, but I feel like I need more structure than my correspondence course gives.
If anyone can help me with this, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for the link. You're right, they are quite expensive, but it looks like she teaches some interesting courses.

Hi,

I'm also a student of jyotish. I know that BHU in Varanasi has such a program, and if you're serious about researching this kind of thing, I would check the various Sanskrit Universities since most of the important texts are written in that language. I've noticed that Ayurveda and Jyotish programs tend to be offered most often by these institutions. However, I don't know what kind of linguistic proficiency you would need to exhibit in order to attend. Best of Luck and keep us posted!

Thanks, Agarth. I have come across BHU in my search, and will look at that one and other Sanskrit Universities as well.

Do you know if universities are the best way to study Jyotish (If having that degree is very beneficial, or if it would be just as good to study on my own and take non-academic classes or find a teacher)?

I've also heard of people studying things like Jyotish & Ayurveda in ashrams- do you know of any ashrams that offer this type of education?

How do you study Jyotish?

Studying Jyotish in India

Hello,
Sorry I can't say I have studied Jyotish in India but thank you for this thread. I have the same interest!
Here are links to some schools in India which seem to be geared toward working adults (weekend classes, etc.) and also, I think, instruction in English. This is just my own "web surfing" research can not vouch for any of them:
http://www.bjs-india.org/class.html
http://www.ivaindia.com/course-materials.php

This is an old thread but would be interested to hear any new reports on the topic!

Correspondence course in India

Greetings Narendra.d Sir,

Am a student of Vedic Astrology from a state university in Sri Lanka. From the day I saw your post titled "List of Institutions in India where Astrology is Being Taught as Part of Sanskrit or Other Branch" , it has been the 'Bible' for me on institutions for distance learning on the subject (not that I believe in the Bible; just the English saying ).

BTW, I have been seeking for a reliable institute (not an individual guru) in India that offers a correspondence course on KP system.

What is your opinion about the following two institutes?

1. KP Stellar Astrology Research Institute (are they reputed to receive the course fee and go silent as I read in some other post?)

2 Institute of Vedic Astrology - is this a respected institute among the Astrological community in India?

Kindly advice me if possible as I intend to enrol in a correspondence course ASAP.

Thanking you with best wishes,

ViKARLL

Glad that you found the list useful. The source of the information is at the top of the post.

I am neither a student not someone who can claim any knowledge of this branch of science (some may disagree this is a science) or its institutions. It may be better to learn something like this in person with a learned guru than through correspondence. Beyond this I am sorry but I have nothing more to help you.
