Can anyone tell me why, in some instances, Ganesha's trunk is clockwise and other times anti-clockwise. Is there a specific reason for this?
Happiness is for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched and those who have tried. For only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. (Anon.)

Lightbulb Trunk curling towards left

Ganesha's trunk mostly curls to reach the left hand. [90 per cent] The left hand symbolizes our feminine side, Ganesha' benevolent [feminine] aspect, which means one should get all the good things in life.. money, good food, good progeny, name and fame and so on.

Trunk curling towards the right hand indicates the predominance of the masculine aspect of Ganesha. This indicates austerity, honesty, integrity, thrift, and living a life based on human moral values/principles. Now who in his/her right mind would ask these things from Ganesha in this Kali yuga?

Most people are afraid to keep the right curled trunk Ganesha for reasons which stem from fear. They feel that Ganesha will get angry[and strike bacl!] if they forget to do poojaa on some day due to inadvertance. Of course, Ganesha does not strike back. We invite negative events as a result of our own lack of principles in day to day life. The ignorant blame Ganesha for it!
The Universe is an ellipsoid?... or a Spheroid?? If the sphere smiles... it becomes an ellipse. This IS Creation.

When you say to the left/right, do you mean to Ganesha's left/right, or the viewer's left/right? I'm assuming the former.....
Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma

Thank you AvidTrekker & wandering_kat............It would appear that all my Ganesha's veer towards the "right"! I'll definitely have to get another so I also have the feminine aspect at home.

Can't see why anyone would fear him - he's a hardworking lil fella - luv him to bits

It seems to be that the right side is the is very much right for this Yuga and the left is just a fringe benefit.

In ALL of us there is a right side called the side of shiva and the left side called the side of shakti.

Most of us in the Kali Yuga opt for "comfort" rather than "the right thing". We opt for preya rather than the shreya. What we like v/s what is right.

Not that shakti implies wrong doing... she is the Supreme Mother.... and mothers tend to indulge their children..... fathers tend to be stricter

Sounds like there is more Mind in Shakti, when Shiva knows what is best for our journey, Shakti comforts us and slows us down, where Shiva wants to ensure that we get home, Shiva is the destroyer, to wake us from our illusions, where Shakti is the deity presiding over the throat chakra, they highest form of Maya. Shiva destroys Maya and sets the soul Atma, free from Chaurasi.

Sheeesh, pretty difficult to put into everyday life, but being 'aware' would make it a bit easier.

I still find it strange that most of the Ganesha's I've seen are displaying the Shiva aspect - the Shakti Ganesha's seem hard to come by . Some of those 'fringe benefits' would come in handy in this Kali age.

These answers are all so interesting..........I would never have found out if it hadn't been for IM - THANK YOU ALL!!!!

In Mumbai, plenty of the left trunked vigrahas available. In fact most Mumbai folks are rather afraid of the right trunked ones and would not bring such a vigraha into their house.

So does this mean that in each region in India it's either Shiva or Shakti that are favoured, i.e. Shakti in Mumbai?

If I'd known how much significance there was to Ganesha's trunk when I was there, I certainly would have bought my Shakti one. I sure hope I can find one here; possibly invite some 'fringe benefits' into my home - now this lil fella's trunk is going the wrong way.........

So that's why men sit on the right hand side and ladies on the left? Shiva/Shakti............

Not consciously... but subconciously, yes. Because most people don't know. They are just afraid of the right trunked one: "if you forget to do poojaa on one day; you will be ruined"... something to that effect. As if darling gaNapati ever ruined anybody... its our ignorance which ruins us.

Probably gaNapati thought that there was too much shakti in your house and set about righting the "imbalance"... who knows?

Yes. This particular habit is so ancient that it belongs to the age of the rishees when they actually knew why they sat like that. Now, its just out of habit... one wouldn't know the reason why.

I would never have imagined a discussion on this going topic so far.... i must say thanks to IndiaMike..., its a wonderful forum

I must ask Mike to make a gaNapati smiley.... maybe after he gets married!

Yes, I'll second what you said............thank you IndiaMike and you too AvidTrekker for being so patient and answering my questions. I don't know of any other forum that would've taken the time to answer in such detail, if at all .

A lil Ganesh smiley would be nice, but like you said, after the wedding!!!!

I'm sure I have plenty of questions to ask, but the Ganesh one has been puzzling me for a long time, and what better place to ask, than right here at IM!! THANK YOU.
