Favorite ashram/meditation center in northern India?
Happy journey, Sunshine. There is lots of light waiting for you in India, that's for sure. Just go with an open mind and everything is going to open up for you.
PM me any time you need something. I'm just back from a year in India and will only be traveling through you now!
With Love,
-Dave

I tried to fill in the visit request form to the Santosh Puri Ashram but i don't think it worked out. I've sent them a regular email though.
Great thread though, would love to see some more options. Because I want to stay at some peaceful (i.e. not Rishikesh) place for a week or two and learn as much as possible about myself or yoga or meditation or whatever.
Thanks

Thank you david for your response. Can you tell me from your experience about the possibilities of the existence of such organic farms in and around uttarakhand? On a separate note, can you give me, from your own experience, an estimate of the expenditure one has to bear for lets say an year if one were to travel frequently between ashrams and maintain a wandering lifestyle? It'd be immensely helpful. I will take anything i get for as less money as possible to sustain longer. Hi Sunshine,
Did you find out about women being able to stay in these local monasteries / ashrams? What about couples? Would we be allowed to stay in different rooms or same rooms?
Thanks!

Hi David,You seem to be the right person here. Would you know any ashrams in and around rishikesh up till Gangotri
where it is ok for single women. Also i read earlier that you now prefer solitary places. Im looking for a solitary experience/silence/meditation in a green/cool/tranquil place for upto a month. Where would you recommend? Would highly appreciate.

Thank you for providing the infos. I am travelling to Himachal Pradesh Leh and Laddkah this May before moving to Canada. Though I would be checking some places listed by you, I would be doing a 10 day free meditation course in Dharamsala at the Vipassana Meditation Centre.(http://www.dhamma.org) I am just preparing myself for it, cause they have tough rules like No Talking for 10 days !! I hope it helps me.
Thanks!

In Uttarakhand, there is the following ashram where the swamiji is in silence -mauna- for many years, quite spartan, it is rather cold in winter:
Sadhan Kendra Ashram, villDomet, district of Dehra Dun
I was disappointed by Santosh Puris Ashram, because it was, like many other 'ashrams' in the busy part of Rishikesh, just for foreigners/tourists. attendees to the course and residents of the ashram were two different groups: we ate separately, no one was attending the meditation session before sleeping, I had to ask for it. I felt like a customer, not the member of a community. If your goal is to learn a little bit about yoga and meditation, maybe it's good, -or I can teach you that too ;-)- but they are also very expensive -15euros a day-, that is another thing that convinced me to leave. be very discriminative, because it is well known that ashrams attract money, I mean, tourists...
