This is good info. Earlier, I came to know about an UTI ATM at Yumthang (North SIkkim). One day they might put up an ATM on the summit of Mt. Everest. Ha Ha

Now taking it to the top of the peak is quite high up I must say

I was in Sikkim in December end and went to Yumthang, but where have they tucked the ATM?

I heard about in a magazine and may have seen a pic of it, embedded in snow, and they say it was Yumthang, that is what I remember. May be some place between Lachung and Yumthang, near the barracks of Assam Rifles.

The espresso maker was mentioned in Sherry Ortner´s Life And Death on Mount Everestand not as a neat little gadget , more like the impressive centerpiece in the expedition leaders tent
.

A fantastic read for anyone interested in East-West interaction on both personal and societal level . There is an Indian edition.
And yes , last time around I finally made it to Lhasa. Like finding a second home.

There are some more pic´s in my blog

Vistet, thanks for the book mention, let me see if I can buy it online.

And I am so surprised that people who have such interesting information to share, do not update their blogs regularly! What a pity, at least from my perspective. Do you get the hint?

And tomorrow I have a class to take, I am taking out my internet cord

I bought my copy from Vedams :

https://www.vedamsbooks.com/no15480.htm

but in India I´m sure you´ll find it at a lot better price. I still got a hardcover edition for a paperback price, no complaints there.

HI all!

Bhaswaran, i think you are right. I 'think' I saw one just after the Lachung village in the army camp - just opposite the CSD canteen.

Mridula, I was in Thegu one week before they officially inaugrated the opening of the border - I couldn't use it then.

I will try to get pictures of both the ATM's unless someone beats me to it :-)

Vistet, my friend - your inputs are distracting me from my work

Btw, I never thought of it this way -

I´m equally surprised by your bad experience , I´ve always had my books delivered 7-8 days after ordering , and they´ve also supplied me with books that aren´t listed online.

28 USD was my price (hardbound) , with airmail to Sweden , so obviously it should be available at a better price. Thought it was published by Rupa (I´m on a pit stop enroute to work) , but it seems it´s Oxford University Press.

Another morsel from the gender section of the book : in the 80´s the gender issue came on agenda also within the climbing community. Some expeditions refused to employ an all-male crew , in the end creating a whole new concept : the female sherpa (still rare) .

On the Western side the most spectacular effort was the American all-female Annapurna expeditions (struggling internally if it was a valid effort using male sherpas) who raised something like 25 % of the budget with .. a T-shirt . This T-shirt that still sells well :

If it has been published by Rupa, chances are I might find it in a book store. Anyway, the day I get into the mood for a spending spree, I know where I will spend the money.

I may be slow but I can take a hint, so I´ve moved on from making it exclusively a travel blog.

There are some new bells and whistles too : a RSS feed (click on the RSS icon in the address field ), and some taggings :

The travel posts

Photoblog

Books & stuff

I´m currently reading a book from Orchid Press in Bangkok, which smells .... well , like orchids. I wonder who packed it up ..

Good to see a few new posts on your blog. People who blog genereally try to write one post per day (I myself am unable to do it so many times). But at least a few times a week is a good thing to aim for?

And thanks a lot for Nettle comment on my Bichoo Jari post.Never knew both are the same.
