Welcome to Indiamike. As per my knowledge, you cannot get to Lachung in one day from Ravangla. But, talk to a travel agent in advance. They can give you more first hand information about the matter. The main cause is that all jeeps are not permitted to enter Lachung. The jeeps which have registration from North Sikkim and the drivers who are inhabitants of North Sikkim are only allowed to enter there. So, the same jeep on which you will be travelling from Ravangla to Gangtok cannot proceed to Lachung. The distance is another deterring factor. For Gangtok-Lachung takes almost the whole day, and Ravangla-Gangtok will also take some hours (maybe 3 hrs). and as the suns sets, the drivers did not want to travel in the trecherous roads of North Sikkim. But talk to a travel agent based at Gangtok first. And lastly, if you have three nights, my advice is that do not spend at three different places. Stay at one, say Pelling, and enjoy others, otherwise, there will be a hectic journey and you will only come down at Kolkata to say that you have visited and stayed at many places but did not "see" them thoroughly. |

No you can not reach Lachung from Ravangla in one day. You have not mentioned when you will be going. In Sikkim weather plays a great role in transportation. Land slides are common place in north Sikkim during rains. Ravangla is a very quaint peaceful place with great mountain view and the monastery at Pelling should not be missed. So you can spend one night each at these places. Do get up early and you will see the most wonderful sunrise from these two places, of course if weather permits. Arrive in Gangtok and arrange your north Sikkim tour. Talk to various operators, check the rates, the type of accomodation & the vehicle and start next day early morning. The road conditions in north Sikkim are not too good so delays can happen & plan accordingly. North Sikkim is wild & beautiful.

I don't think there is any restrictions of photography. In general do not take photos of military establishments.

Correct...there are no restrictions on photography in Yumthang valley now...but have a chat with your jeep driver regarding the matter. When I went there in December end 2002, there was official restriction but unofficially, Indian military was very tolerant. The sentry at the checkpost just walked upto our jeep and causually asked if we are carrying any camera. He smiled as we said all at once "No" , seemed he knew very well that we are hiding our cameras in our bags. I even managed to take a tripod there putting it at the floor of the jeep. They did not search.
And when I was busy photographing in the snow-covered valley then, suddenly out of the blue came two army jeeps, crossed past us and headed to the last border outpost beyong Zadong. The men in uniform in the jeep just smiled and waved at us and said nothing. I cannot comment on the lodging facilities as North SIkkim is done in a package. You cannot go there individually. The tour operator will arrange for permits, fooding and lodging. Visit Gurudongmar Lake if possible. regards, Bhaswaran |

Hey thank u again for quick reply....
With ur suggestions I'm planning like this... Day1:Train from kolkata Day2:Gangtok Day3:Lachung Day4:Yumthang,Yumesamdang and return to Lachung Day5:Katao and return to Gangtok Day6:To Pelling Day7:Pelling Day8:Rinchenpong Day9:Train from NJP Day10:Kolkata I can't visit Gurudongmar as there'll be children and aged with me.Will visit surely some next time. Also my duration can't be increased.Keeping this in mind plz advise if this is OK or not. For Gangtok,we've visited it early so no sight seeing there....also can't omit it if want to visit North Sikkim...otherwise keeping gangtok totally off will have not been any problem.... |
